Chapter 18 - The Locker Number Nine

Margaret led the group through the abandoned station to an old luggage storage room.
Hundreds of metal lockers lined both walls.
Most were rusted shut.
Only one appeared untouched.
Locker Number 9.
Margaret stopped before it.
"This has been waiting for you."
Emily frowned.
"For me?"
Margaret nodded.
"Your mother left it here."
Emily froze.
"My mother?"
David quietly looked away.
Thomas noticed.
"You told us she died."
David answered softly.
"I believed she had."
Margaret unlocked the locker with an antique brass key.
Inside rested a small wooden box wrapped in faded blue cloth.
A handwritten envelope lay on top.
Across it, elegant handwriting read:
To Emily — Open Only When You Can Finally Choose Your Own Path.
Emily's hands trembled as she lifted the envelope.
She recognized the handwriting immediately.
She had seen it in childhood birthday cards.
Christmas letters.
Tiny notes hidden inside lunch boxes.
"My mother's..."
Tears filled her eyes.
David closed his own.
"I never knew she left this."
Emily carefully unfolded the letter.
Only one sentence appeared inside.
Trust no one who asks you to choose quickly.
Nothing more.
No explanation.
No signature.
Thomas examined the wooden box.
"It has another lock."
Margaret nodded.
"The second half of the archive."
David looked surprised.
"There are two?"
"There were always two."
Margaret faced Emily.
"One contains evidence."
"The other contains the truth."
Before anyone could ask another question, every light inside the luggage room suddenly went dark.
Emergency alarms began echoing throughout the underground station.

Margaret whispered only one word.
"They're here."
