Chapter 25 - The Portrait Without a Face

Emily entered the chamber cautiously.
The air felt different inside.
Cool.
Still.
Almost untouched by time.
Margaret remained near the entrance while Thomas carefully examined the portraits.
"There are at least seventy."
David corrected him.
"Eighty-three."
"You counted them?"
"I helped move them."
Emily turned sharply.
"You've been here before."
"Many times."
"And you never told me."
"I hoped you would never need to know."
Evelyn approached the empty frame.
"When a Director accepts the position..."
She gently touched the brass plate.
"...their portrait is painted after their first year."
Emily frowned.
"What if they refuse?"
No one answered immediately.
Finally Margaret spoke.
"There has never been a refusal."
Emily folded her arms.
"Then I'll be the first."
The room fell silent.
For the first time, Evelyn's calm expression weakened.
"It may not be that simple."
A mechanical click echoed beneath the marble floor.
The empty portrait slowly rotated.
Hidden behind it was a small steel compartment.
Inside rested a single object.
Emily's wedding ring.
She froze.
"I left that behind."
David stared at the ring in disbelief.
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
"How did it get here?"
"I don't know."
"You expect us to believe that?"
"The Chamber chooses what each successor must confront."
Emily slowly picked up the ring.
It was scratched exactly as she remembered.
Inside the band, one detail caught her attention.
A tiny engraved symbol she had never noticed before.
Not initials.
Not a date.
A strange geometric emblem.
David's face lost all color.
"Impossible..."
Thomas looked at him.
"You recognize it."
David nodded once.
"That symbol wasn't added after the wedding."
Emily's heartbeat quickened.
"What are you saying?"
May you like
David looked directly into her eyes.
"It was made before either of you were born."
