Chapter 10 - The Surgeon Who Remembered

Adrian stared at Dr. Harrow.
For three years, he had imagined this reunion.
In some versions, he blamed the surgeon.
In others, he said nothing.
Now, standing outside intensive care while another child fought for breath, none of those imagined conversations mattered.
Harrow looked older.
More exhausted.
But his voice remained steady.
"I took the first available medical flight."
Elena stepped forward.
"You're Dr. Harrow?"
He nodded.
"Lucia is being stabilized now."
"Can you save her?"
The question stopped everyone.
Harrow didn't offer false comfort.
"I believe we can help her. But I need updated imaging before I know how much her condition has changed."
Elena's face collapsed.
"It changed?"
"Her oxygen crisis may indicate increased obstruction or pressure on the right side of her heart."
She looked toward the sealed doors.
"She was stable when we boarded."
Harrow spoke gently.
"She was surviving. That isn't always the same as stable."
Adrian watched Elena absorb the words.
He remembered hearing similar sentences years before.
Medical language had a way of sounding calm while destroying everything inside a parent.
Harrow turned toward Adrian.
"The hospital board received your authorization."
"Good."
"They also received your request to reactivate the emergency fund."
"Good."
"You understand what that means?"
Adrian's expression hardened.
"It means treatment begins before accountants finish talking."
"It also means reopening every legal and financial responsibility you walked away from."
Elena looked between them.
Adrian didn't hesitate.
"Then reopen them."
Harrow studied him carefully.
"Sophie would have wanted that."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Don't use her name to convince me."
"I'm not convincing you. You already decided."
The doors opened.
A nurse approached.
"Dr. Harrow, imaging is ready."
Harrow turned to Elena.
"I'll examine the results personally."
"Can I see her?"
"For one minute."
Elena followed the nurse inside.
Adrian remained in the corridor.
Harrow paused beside him.
"You blamed me."
Adrian stared ahead.
"I blamed everyone."
"Including yourself."
"Especially myself."
Harrow nodded.
"I read every letter you sent after Sophie died."
Adrian looked at him sharply.
"I didn't send letters."
"No. You wrote them and left them in the foundation office. Your assistant found them after you disappeared."
Adrian's face changed.
Harrow continued.
"You wrote that no child should be denied a chance because their parents were poor. Then you closed the organization that gave them that chance."
The words landed heavily.
Adrian lowered his eyes.
"I wasn't thinking clearly."
"Maybe you're thinking clearly now."
Before Adrian could respond, a nurse rushed from intensive care.
"Dr. Harrow, you need to see this."
They entered the imaging room.
A scan glowed on the screen.
Harrow leaned closer.
His expression changed instantly.
Adrian recognized that look.
It was the same look doctors had exchanged before telling him Sophie's condition was worse than expected.
"What is it?" he asked.
Harrow pointed toward a narrow section of Lucia's pulmonary artery.
"The obstruction is more severe than her previous scans showed."
"Can you operate?"
Harrow didn't answer.
Another physician entered.
"There is something else."
She enlarged a second image.
A faint shadow appeared near the heart.
Harrow went silent.
Adrian felt the air leave the room.
"What are we looking at?"
May you like
The surgeon finally turned toward him.
"A complication that may change the entire surgical plan."
