Chapter 15 - The Letter Sophie Never Sent

Fifteen minutes later, Adrian's assistant hurried into the hospital carrying a weather-worn leather bag.
She looked relieved to see him standing outside intensive care.
"I came as quickly as I could."
"You have it?"
She nodded.
From the bag she carefully removed a small walnut-colored wooden box.
The edges had faded with age.
The brass latch showed tiny scratches from years of use.
Adrian stared at it without touching it.
"I almost turned around three times on the way here."
"Why?"
"I wasn't sure you really wanted it."
"I wasn't sure either."
She handed him the box.
As Adrian lifted it, memories flooded back.
Hospital rooms.
Birthday balloons.
Drawings taped to refrigerator doors.
Tiny shoes beside the front door.
A voice calling,
"Daddy!"
His fingers trembled.
Elena quietly stepped back, sensing this wasn't her moment.
After several deep breaths, Adrian finally opened the latch.
Inside lay dozens of small memories.
A tiny hospital bracelet.
Crayon drawings.
Photographs.
A faded stuffed elephant.
And beneath them...
A sealed envelope.
He frowned.
"I've never seen this."
His assistant looked surprised.
"It was already inside when I packed everything after..."
She stopped herself.
"...after Sophie."
Across the front, written in uneven pencil, were four simple words.
For Daddy. Later.
Adrian's heartbeat quickened.
"Sophie couldn't write much."
"She had help," the assistant whispered.
Very carefully, he opened the envelope.
Inside was a folded sheet covered with large, uneven handwriting.
Some letters were backward.
Some words were misspelled.
But every line was unmistakably hers.
Dear Daddy,
If I get better, let's go see the ocean.
If I don't...
Please help another little girl.
Because maybe her daddy is scared too.
I love you bigger than airplanes.
Love,
Sophie.
The corridor became completely silent.
Adrian couldn't breathe.
Three years...
Three years that letter had waited inside the box.
Unread.
Forgotten.
Tears rolled freely down his face for the first time since his daughter's funeral.
Elena slowly approached.
Without saying a word, she placed Lucia's tiny bracelet beside Sophie's letter.
Hope.
Brave.
Two children's words.
Separated by years.
Connected by one impossible morning.
Before Adrian could gather himself, Dr. Harrow rushed out of intensive care.
"Adrian."
He immediately stood.
"What happened?"
"The storm has finally moved east."
"Dr. Voss?"
"He just called."
Adrian's eyes filled with hope.
"He's coming?"
Harrow nodded.
"Yes."
Then his expression changed again.
"But there's another problem."
"What now?"
"The airport reopened..."
He paused.
"...only long enough for one incoming medical aircraft."
"And?"
May you like
Harrow looked directly at Adrian.
"Another critically ill child is already on that flight."
