Chapter 13 - The Little Bracelet

As dawn slowly approached, the storm finally began to weaken.
Inside Lucia's room, machines continued their endless rhythm.
Beep.
Pause.
Beep.
Elena gently adjusted the blanket covering her daughter.
While doing so, something slipped from Lucia's tiny wrist.
A faded pink bracelet.
Made from woven thread.
Tiny white beads spelled out one word.
HOPE.
Adrian noticed it immediately.
"Did you make that?"
Elena smiled for the first time since boarding the plane.
"No."
She picked it up carefully.
"Lucia did."
Adrian looked confused.
"She made it?"
"Well..."
A small laugh escaped through exhausted tears.
"I helped with the knots."
"When she was healthy enough to sit in the hospital playroom, volunteers gave the children colored strings."
Elena turned the bracelet over.
"Every child wrote one word."
"What did Lucia choose?"
"She couldn't write."
"So I asked what she wanted."
Elena swallowed.
"She pointed at another little girl whose bracelet said Hope."
Adrian looked down silently.
"The volunteer asked if she wanted the same word."
Elena nodded.
"Lucia smiled."
She gently fastened the bracelet around the baby's wrist again.
"Since then she refuses to sleep without it."
Adrian stared at the tiny woven threads.
His breathing slowed.
Years earlier...
Another bracelet.
Another hospital.
Another little girl.
His daughter Sophie had made one too.
Different colors.
Different word.
BRAVE.
He suddenly remembered where he had placed it.
Inside a wooden box.
Locked away after her funeral.
Never opened again.
Without warning, Adrian stood.
"I'll be back."
Elena watched him leave.
Outside the hospital entrance, Adrian walked alone into the cold morning rain.
He called his assistant.
"I need something brought here."
"What is it?"
"A small wooden box from my home office."
"The one in your study?"
"Yes."
"The one you've never allowed anyone to touch?"
"Yes."
His assistant hesitated.
"Sir..."
"Bring it."
Adrian ended the call.
He looked toward the gray sky.
For three years he had refused to open that box.
Today...
For reasons he couldn't fully explain...
May you like
He finally felt ready.
