Chapter 21 - A Promise in the Hallway

Preparations began immediately.
The operating room schedule was rewritten.
Additional nurses were called in from home.
The anesthesia department assembled a second support team.
Word spread quickly throughout the hospital.
Every available specialist wanted to help.
Adrian watched the organized chaos with quiet disbelief.
Three years earlier he had abandoned this world.
Yet it had continued saving lives every day without him.
His assistant approached carrying a tablet.
"The board has approved emergency funding."
"So quickly?"
She smiled.
"They didn't vote."
"They didn't?"
"They unanimously stood up before anyone asked the question."
Adrian looked surprised.
"They've been waiting for you to come back."
Before he could answer, Dr. Harrow handed him a folder.
"I need one signature."
Adrian opened it.
The document officially restored the Cole Foundation's emergency pediatric program.
Effective immediately.
He stared at Sophie's handwritten letter tucked inside his jacket.
Please help another little girl.
He signed without hesitation.
His assistant smiled through tears.
"I never thought I'd see this day."
Neither had Adrian.
Across the hallway, Elena watched him from a distance.
She walked over quietly.
"I don't know how I'll ever thank you."
"You already have."
"I haven't done anything."
"You reminded me that grief doesn't have to be the end of someone's story."
Before Elena could respond, Lucia stirred inside the room.
Her tiny fingers searched weakly beneath the blanket.
The nurse placed the stuffed rabbit back into her hand.
Almost instantly, Lucia relaxed.
May you like
The entire room seemed to breathe again.
