Chapter 7 - The Call That Reopened the Past

As the plane descended toward Iceland, the cabin remained unusually quiet.
Nobody slept now.
Passengers watched the small medical emergency unfolding several rows behind them.
Lucia's oxygen levels had stabilized, but only barely.
The doctor continued monitoring her.
Elena held the baby's hand, whispering promises she wasn't sure she could keep.
Adrian stood near the forward galley with a satellite handset provided by the captain.
The flight attendant waited beside him.
"International calls may take a moment to connect."
Adrian entered a number from memory.
His hand paused above the final button.
Three years had passed since he had called it.
Three years since he had spoken to anyone connected to the foundation.
He pressed the button.
The line rang.
Once.
Twice.
A man's tired voice answered.
"This is Harrow."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Julian."
Silence.
Then the voice changed.
"Adrian?"
"Yes."
"Where are you?"
"On a diverted flight approaching Reykjavik."
Another pause.
"Why are you calling me?"
Adrian looked toward Elena and Lucia.
"There's a baby onboard. Eight months old. Pulmonary artery reconstruction scheduled with you tomorrow."
"Name?"
"Lucia Ramirez."
A keyboard clicked rapidly on the other end.
"I have her file."
"Her oxygen dropped in flight. A doctor stabilized her, but we're landing early."
"How early?"
"Within thirty minutes."
Harrow's voice became urgent.
"I'll contact the pediatric team in Reykjavik."
"That isn't all."
Adrian lowered his voice.
"The surgery hasn't been financially cleared."
Silence returned.
"Adrian, you know hospital policy isn't controlled by me."
"I know."
"And your foundation account is frozen."
"I know that too."
"Then what exactly are you asking?"
Adrian stared through the galley opening at Lucia.
The baby was gripping Elena's finger now.
He remembered another hospital room.
Another small hand.
Another monitor that had eventually fallen silent.
"I'm asking you to operate."
"I already agreed to examine her."
"No. I'm asking you to prepare the operating room before she arrives."
Harrow exhaled slowly.
"That requires authorization."
"You'll have it."
"From whom?"
Adrian looked down at the handset.
"From me."
The doctor on the other end said nothing.
Adrian continued.
"Contact the board. Tell them the Cole Foundation is reopening emergency operations."
The flight attendant's eyes widened.
Across the cabin, the businessman overheard and slowly stood.
Harrow finally spoke.
"You shut everything down after Sophie."
"I know."
"You refused every request to return."
"I know."
"What changed?"
Adrian looked toward Lucia.
"Someone fell asleep on my shoulder."
Harrow was silent for several seconds.
Then he said,
"I'll make the calls."
Adrian disconnected.
When he returned to his seat, Elena looked at him with frightened hope.
"What happened?"
"Your daughter will be admitted."
Elena's lips trembled.
"And the payment?"
"Handled."
She shook her head.
"I can't let you do that."
"You didn't ask me to."
"Then why?"
Adrian sat beside her.
Before he could answer, the plane shook sharply.
The captain announced strong crosswinds over Reykjavik and warned that the first landing attempt might be difficult.
The doctor checked Lucia's monitor again.
The numbers had begun dropping.
Adrian looked toward the window.
Below them, runway lights appeared through heavy rain.
But as the aircraft approached the ground, the engines suddenly roared.
The plane climbed again.
May you like
The landing had been aborted.
And Lucia's monitor began sounding a new alarm.
