Chapter 2 - A Moment Nobody Expected

The gentle vibration of the engines blended into a steady rhythm that filled the darkened cabin.
One by one, reading lights disappeared.
Passengers drifted into sleep.
Even Lucia's cries became quieter, replaced by weak little sniffles against her mother's shoulder.
Elena continued whispering lullabies she barely remembered from her own childhood.
Half the words escaped her.
The melody remained.
It had comforted Lucia before.
Tonight, even music seemed powerless.
Her vision blurred.
She blinked repeatedly.
Stay awake.
Just stay awake.
Five more minutes.
Another five.
She adjusted Lucia carefully, terrified of dropping her.
Across the aisle, an elderly woman watched with gentle concern.
The businessman removed one headphone.
Another passenger rolled his eyes.
"Seriously..."
His complaint faded when the elderly woman looked directly at him.
He said nothing more.
Elena's breathing slowed.
Her head became heavier.
Without realizing it, she leaned slightly sideways.
The stranger beside her noticed.
He quietly closed his laptop.
Folded it away.
Straightened in his seat.
Still he said nothing.
Another minute passed.
Elena's hand slowly relaxed around Lucia's blanket.
Her body surrendered.
Her head gently rested against the man's shoulder.
The entire movement happened naturally.
Completely unconsciously.
For several seconds the man froze.
His jaw tightened.
He looked toward the sleeping woman leaning against him.
Then toward the baby.
Lucia stirred uneasily.
One tiny cry escaped her lips.
Without thinking, the man raised a careful hand.
Not toward Elena.
Toward Lucia.
He lightly supported the baby's blanket before it slipped.
His movements were incredibly cautious.
As though afraid even breathing too loudly might wake them.
The flight attendant noticed from several rows away.
She stopped walking.
Another attendant joined her.
Neither interrupted.
The businessman across the aisle lowered his newspaper.
The elderly woman smiled.
Nobody spoke.
The stranger shifted only enough to keep Elena comfortable.
He accepted the awkward position without complaint.
His expensive suit wrinkled beneath her weight.
He ignored it.
Minutes passed.
Then thirty.
Still he didn't move.
His shoulder gradually became stiff.
His neck cramped.
His arm tingled from remaining perfectly still.
Yet every time Lucia twitched, he adjusted ever so slightly to keep both mother and child safe.
The cabin had become almost completely silent.
Not because everyone had fallen asleep.
Because they were watching.
And slowly...
The irritation that had filled the aircraft earlier began disappearing.
Something else replaced it.
May you like
Understanding.
