Chapter 18 - Thomas Hayes’s Last Rebellion

Far beneath Bellarose, Eleanor and Samuel followed the sound of distant machinery.

The tunnels became older with every step. Modern cables disappeared, replaced by brick arches and iron support beams blackened by decades of smoke.

Thomas’s journal directed them toward a chamber called the Silent Room.

According to his notes, sound could not travel through its reinforced walls.

It had been designed for interrogations.

Eleanor found the entrance open.

Inside, Thomas Hayes sat beneath a single hanging light.

He looked thinner than the man in her memories, but when he lifted his face, she recognized him instantly.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Eleanor crossed the room and held him.

Twenty-eight years of grief collapsed between them.

“I thought you were dead,” she whispered.

“I needed you to believe it.”

She stepped back.

“You abandoned me.”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I protected you badly.”

Samuel examined the chains attached to Thomas’s chair. They were already unlocked.

“This is too easy.”

Thomas nodded.

“Because Adrian wants me free.”

“Why?”

“He needs all three founders present.”

Eleanor frowned.

“There are only two of us.”

Thomas looked toward the corridor.

“No. Rose’s Kitchen had three legal founders.”

Daniel had never known the truth.

When Eleanor purchased the original building, Thomas secretly added the homeless teenage boy she had rescued as a future beneficiary.

The trust recognized Eleanor, Thomas, and Daniel as equal founders once Daniel reached adulthood.

“That is why they need him,” Thomas explained. “The Founder’s Vault does not open with one key. It requires three living authorizations.”

Eleanor removed the iron key from her necklace.

Thomas revealed a second key hidden inside the heel of his shoe.

“Daniel has the third,” he said.

“He doesn’t know it.”

Thomas described the silver button sewn inside the first chef’s jacket Eleanor had given Daniel. Daniel had kept that jacket framed in his private office for decades.

The button was actually a coded metal seal.

Samuel suddenly remembered the shattered display case.

“Adrian stole the jacket.”

Thomas stood painfully.

“No. He stole the wrong one.”

Years earlier, Thomas had replaced the real seal and hidden it inside Bellarose’s original anniversary bell.

Eleanor looked toward the ceiling as a deep vibration traveled through the tunnels.

The restaurant clock above them began approaching midnight.

Thomas gripped her hand.

“If the three seals are activated together, the vault will open.”

“And what is inside?”

“Evidence powerful enough to destroy the Circle.”

“That sounds like something we should open.”

Thomas shook his head.

“The evidence is not the danger.”

He looked toward the darkness beyond the Silent Room.

“The machine protecting it is.”

A loud mechanical pulse moved through the floor.

Somewhere deeper underground, ancient locks began turning.

Thomas’s face tightened.

“Daniel has reached the Twelve Seats.”
