Chapter 28 - The Forgotten Founder

The projection did not show the Daniel everyone knew.

Instead, it displayed dozens of possible futures.

Daniel as Chairman.

Daniel imprisoned.

Daniel disappearing.

Daniel standing beside Eleanor while Bellarose became an international organization.

Harold watched silently.

“The archive doesn't predict the future.”

“It calculates probability.”

Thomas stepped closer.

“That technology didn't exist forty years ago.”

“It does now.”

Harold looked toward the black sphere.

“For decades the Circle collected information from banks, hospitals, schools, courts, charities, and businesses.”

Melissa suddenly understood.

“The archive learns.”

“It always has.”

Eleanor stared at Daniel's projection.

One possibility appeared repeatedly.

Daniel refusing leadership.

Every simulation following that decision ended the same way.

Total institutional collapse.

Economic panic.

Violence.

Daniel looked horrified.

“You're saying the Circle keeps society stable?”

Harold answered calmly.

“No.”

“It keeps society predictable.”

Thomas immediately disagreed.

“Predictability purchased through corruption isn't stability.”

Harold smiled.

“Perhaps.”

“But destroy every hidden system overnight…”

He waved his hand.

“…and millions of innocent people will suffer before the guilty do.”

The room fell silent.

It was the first argument Daniel could not dismiss immediately.

Eleanor examined another projection.

It showed Rose's Kitchen exactly as it had appeared decades earlier.

She noticed herself standing beside a young woman she barely remembered.

Harold saw her expression.

“You've recovered most of your memories.”

“Not all.”

“You're missing only one.”

He touched the sphere.

A final recording began playing.

Young Eleanor stood before the original Circle.

Her voice echoed through the library.

“If I ever fail…”

“…promise me Daniel Cole will never discover who his real parents were.”

Present-day Daniel froze.

The recording ended instantly.

Every person in the room turned toward Eleanor.

She closed her eyes.

Thomas slowly lowered his head.

Harold smiled almost sympathetically.

“The greatest secret in the archive was never the Circle.”

He looked directly at Daniel.

“It was you.”

Before anyone could speak, the black sphere emitted a sharp pulse.

Across every projection in the library, a new warning appeared.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.

LOCATION BREACHED.

Then the entire mansion shook violently as explosions echoed somewhere beneath Ashcroft House.
