Chapter 22 - Number One Awakens

Adrian pushed Victor aside and ran toward the machine.
Daniel intercepted him near the platform.
They crashed against the rotating metal frame, narrowly avoiding the gears moving beneath them.
The third key flew from Adrian’s hand and slid across the wet marble floor.
Melissa ran after it.
One of Adrian’s guards raised his weapon.
Samuel struck the guard with a serving tray before he could fire.
The weapon fell into the water.
The countdown continued.
00:03:18.
Melissa reached the key, but the floor beneath her suddenly opened.
A narrow section of marble dropped downward, revealing a maintenance shaft.
She caught the edge with one hand.
Daniel saw her struggling.
“Hold on!”
Adrian grabbed Daniel from behind.
“You still don’t understand,” he hissed. “The archive already selected you.”
Daniel drove his elbow backward and broke free.
“Then it selected the wrong man.”
He pulled Melissa up while Eleanor recovered the third key.
Thomas pointed toward the final slot.
“Insert it now!”
Eleanor pushed the key into place.
For one second, nothing happened.
Then the machine stopped.
The rotating rings froze.
Every light went dark.
The countdown disappeared at 00:02:41.
A deep silence filled Bellarose.
Daniel slowly stood.
“Is it over?”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
A single screen activated.
The words SUCCESSION PROTOCOL ACTIVE vanished.
They were replaced by another message.
SEPARATION REQUEST DENIED.
A hidden speaker produced a woman’s recorded voice.
“Primary authority recognized.”
Eleanor froze.
The machine scanned her face.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED: ELEANOR HAYES.
STATUS: NUMBER ONE.
The black container opened.
Inside was not a collection of documents.
It was a chair.
Black metal restraints rested along its arms, and a circular device hung above the headrest.
Eleanor stared at it as more memories returned.
She had sat in that chair before.
Thomas stepped between her and the machine.
“Don’t listen to it.”
The voice continued.
“Leadership restoration available.”
Adrian began laughing.
“You see? It never belonged to me.”
His guards lowered their weapons, uncertain.
Adrian looked toward Eleanor.
“The archive was waiting for you.”
Eleanor remembered entering the Circle as an undercover investigator. She remembered learning its systems, collecting names, and secretly redirecting money toward shelters, hospitals, and legal defense groups.
But another memory followed.
A darker one.
She had ordered punishments.
She had approved disappearances.
She had become so deeply involved that even Thomas no longer knew whether she was pretending.
Daniel saw fear in her face.
“What did you do?”
“I don’t know how much of it was truly me.”
The chair’s restraints opened automatically.
“Please assume your position, Number One.”
Across the city, screens hidden inside twelve institutions activated.
Bank executives stopped working.
Judges left courtrooms.
Police officials entered private offices.
Each received the same message.
THE FOUNDER HAS RETURNED.
Eleanor stepped away from the chair.
“I refuse.”
The machine answered instantly.
“Refusal will trigger emergency inheritance.”
A new name appeared on the screen.
DANIEL COLE.
May you like
The chair rotated toward him.
