Chapter 9 - The Voice Beyond the Steel Door

The chamber fell into complete silence.
No one breathed.
Eleanor's eyes remained fixed on the thick steel door as though she had seen a ghost.
"Thomas..." she whispered again, barely loud enough for Daniel to hear.
The voice answered immediately.
"Eleanor, don't open the door."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who are you?"
"I don't have much time."
The man's breathing sounded strained through the speaker hidden behind the wall.
"If you're Daniel Cole, listen carefully. Adrian wants you to believe this place belongs to him. It doesn't."
The overhead lights flickered.
Adrian's calm voice interrupted.
"Interesting. He still enjoys telling stories."
A metallic click echoed through the corridor.
Every emergency exit on Daniel's phone blueprint suddenly turned red.
One detective frowned.
"They've remotely locked every access point."
Daniel examined the chamber more carefully.
"This place has power."
"It has much more than power," the voice behind the door replied.
Samuel discovered fresh electrical wiring hidden beneath the old ceiling.
"Someone renovated these tunnels recently."
Daniel looked toward Eleanor.
"You truly believed your husband died?"
She slowly nodded.
"Twenty-eight years ago, they told me the tunnel collapsed during an inspection."
"They lied."
The unknown voice became weaker.
"I survived... but they couldn't allow me to leave."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Who are 'they'?"
No answer.
Instead, another loud vibration shook the chamber.
One wall slowly rotated several inches.
Behind it appeared shelves filled with dusty archive boxes labeled only by years.
1969.
1970.
1971.
1972.
Each box carried the seal of Bellarose's original property trust.
Eleanor gasped.
"Thomas documented everything."
Daniel opened the nearest box.
Inside were photographs, handwritten journals, property transfers, and newspaper articles connecting dozens of influential businessmen to secret land purchases beneath the city.
"This wasn't just about a restaurant," Daniel murmured.
Before anyone could examine more documents, every monitor mounted along the corridor suddenly activated.
Adrian Vale appeared on every screen.
He smiled calmly.
"Congratulations."
May you like
"You've officially entered Phase Two."
