Chapter 30 - Eliana’s Hidden Name

The control room door began bending inward.

Victor searched the walls for another route.

“There must be an emergency tunnel.”

Thomas studied the railway map.

“A ventilation shaft runs behind the western console.”

Melissa pulled the panel aside.

Behind it was a narrow passage barely wide enough for one person.

Daniel refused to enter first.

“Not until someone tells me who Eliana was.”

Eleanor looked toward Thomas.

He lowered his head.

“She was your mother.”

The words seemed to erase every other sound.

Daniel stared at them.

“My mother died when I was born.”

“That is what we told you,” Eleanor said.

“And my father?”

Thomas answered.

“Unknown.”

Daniel stepped back.

“You expect me to believe you protected me by inventing my entire life?”

“We protected you because Eliana was the heir to Ashcroft House.”

Daniel turned toward the empty place where Harold had stood.

“His daughter?”

“His only child.”

The damaged door cracked.

Gray-masked attackers pushed a steel tool through the opening.

Victor raised his gun.

“We can discuss family history after we escape.”

They entered the ventilation passage.

As they crawled through darkness, Eleanor told Daniel what she remembered.

Eliana Ashcroft had grown up inside the Circle. Unlike Harold, she rejected its methods and secretly worked with Eleanor to expose the organization.

She stole names from the archive.

She redirected money.

She helped witnesses escape.

Then she became pregnant.

Harold feared the child could someday inherit legal control of both Ashcroft House and the Circle.

“Eliana gave you to me,” Eleanor said. “She made me promise to hide you.”

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared three days later.”

“Did Harold kill her?”

“I never found proof.”

They reached a maintenance chamber beneath the gardens.

Thomas opened a rusted gate.

Rainwater poured through the ceiling.

Outside, masked attackers searched the grounds with thermal scanners.

Melissa pointed toward an old service truck.

“If we reach that vehicle, we can leave through the north road.”

Before they moved, a voice called from behind them.

“Daniel.”

Clara Voss stepped from the shadows.

She held no weapon.

Two masked agents remained several feet behind her.

Daniel faced her.

“You knew my mother?”

Clara smiled sadly.

“I was there the night she gave birth to you.”

Eleanor moved between them.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

“You ordered my removal. Your people chose another solution.”

“My people?”

“The faction you created inside the Circle.”

Eleanor looked confused.

Clara continued.

“You never wanted to destroy the Circle completely. You wanted to divide it.”

Thomas shook his head.

“That’s not true.”

Clara looked at him.

“You helped her.”

Daniel’s patience broke.

“Where is my mother?”

Clara reached inside her coat and removed a recent photograph.

It showed a woman standing beside a coastal hospital.

Her face was older, but Daniel immediately recognized something familiar in her eyes.

The photograph had been taken only two months earlier.

“Eliana is alive,” Clara said.

Daniel took the image with trembling hands.

“Where?”

“On an island controlled by the oldest surviving branch of the Circle.”

A distant engine started.

Harold’s convoy was leaving the estate.

Clara looked toward the road.

“He has the archive, and he is going to her.”

Daniel stepped toward the service truck.

“Then we follow him.”

Clara blocked his path.

“You cannot reach Eliana as Daniel Cole.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel Cole does not legally exist.”

She handed him a sealed birth record.

The name written across it was not Daniel Cole.

May you like

It was Julian Ashcroft.
