Chapter 24 - The Bell Beneath the Bell

The countdown reached twenty seconds.

Samuel ran toward the anniversary bell.

An officer tried to stop him, but Victor threw himself into the man’s path. Both crashed across the floor.

Samuel lifted the bell from its wooden stand.

Nothing appeared beneath it.

Then Eleanor remembered another image from her lost past.

A smaller bell hidden inside the larger one.

“Turn it upside down!” she shouted.

Samuel overturned the heavy bronze bell.

A narrow compartment opened near its base.

Inside was a small mechanical dial marked with twelve numbers.

The real control.

Deputy Mayor Reese fired.

The bullet struck the bell and sent it spinning across the floor.

Samuel fell backward, clutching his side.

Daniel rushed toward him.

“I’m fine,” Samuel whispered, though blood covered his shirt. “Get the dial.”

Caroline broke free from the officers and ran toward Melissa.

Reese aimed again.

Eleanor stepped between them.

“Enough!”

Her voice echoed through the restaurant.

The machine recognized the authority in her tone.

Every screen changed.

PRIMARY COMMAND DETECTED.

The officers froze.

Even Reese looked uncertain.

Eleanor slowly approached the dial.

“Number One can override all security personnel,” she said, remembering the command structure.

Reese lowered his weapon only slightly.

“You no longer possess full authority.”

“Let us find out.”

She turned the dial to Number Four.

The machine displayed Jonathan Reese’s complete file.

Illegal payments.

Hidden properties.

Recorded conversations.

Orders authorizing kidnappings and murders.

The evidence appeared on every police body camera in the room.

Several officers stared at Reese.

He shouted for them to shut the system down.

No one moved.

Eleanor turned the dial again.

Number Eleven.

Adrian’s crimes filled the screens.

Then Number Eight.

Melissa’s secret payments appeared—but so did the recordings proving she had acted under threats against her daughter.

Each number exposed another Circle member.

Daniel understood.

“The dial doesn’t control the archive.”

“It controls disclosure,” Thomas said.

The Circle had feared it because any member could be destroyed instantly.

Eleanor reached Number One.

Her hand stopped.

The machine asked for confirmation.

Daniel stood beside her.

“You may not want to see it.”

“I need to.”

She turned the dial.

Her own history appeared.

The screen showed Eleanor ordering a secret arrest forty years earlier.

A young journalist had discovered the tunnels.

Eleanor authorized his removal.

The next file showed a judge threatened into silence.

Another showed money taken from a criminal operation and redirected into Rose’s Kitchen.

Some actions had saved lives.

Others had destroyed them.

Eleanor watched without defending herself.

“I became what I entered the Circle to fight.”

Thomas touched her shoulder.

“You also created the evidence that can end it.”

The machine asked one final question.

DISCLOSE COMPLETE ARCHIVE?

Daniel looked through the shattered restaurant doors.

Reporters still waited behind police barriers outside.

If Eleanor confirmed, every record would be transmitted publicly.

Thousands of guilty people could be exposed.

But so could witnesses, victims, and innocent relatives whose names appeared in the system.

Adrian crawled toward the dial.

“Do it,” he urged. “Burn everyone.”

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

“Exposure without judgment could destroy innocent lives.”

Reese suddenly reached for his weapon again.

Victor fired first.

The bullet struck Reese’s hand.

The dial turned accidentally beneath Eleanor’s palm.

A new command appeared.

TRANSFER ARCHIVE TO EXTERNAL LOCATION.

Destination unknown.

Progress: 1%.

Somewhere beneath the city, an underground train engine started.

The black container began descending into the floor.

Daniel grabbed its edge.

“Where is it going?”

Thomas examined the old railway map.

His face changed.

“There was one place the Circle used before Bellarose.”

“Where?”

Thomas pointed beyond the city limits.

“A private estate called Ashcroft House.”

The transfer reached 7%.

Then the entire machine dropped beneath the restaurant and disappeared into the tunnel below, carrying the archive with it.
