Chapter 21 - The Ten-Minute War

The countdown continued.

00:09:41.

Adrian’s armed guards spread across the upper balcony while the machine beneath Bellarose grew louder. Metal rings rotated around the black container, and streams of green light traveled through glass tubes filled with documents, film reels, and sealed samples.

Daniel moved closer to Eleanor.

“What does the succession protocol actually do?”

Thomas stared at the screen.

“It selects replacements for every active member of the Circle.”

“Replacements from where?”

“Families. Employees. Public institutions. Anyone whose future has been quietly shaped by the archive.”

Melissa looked at the thousands of names appearing on the screen.

“These people don’t even know they’ve been chosen.”

“Most successors never know until the Circle needs them,” Thomas said. “Their education, careers, debts, and relationships are controlled years in advance.”

Adrian raised one hand.

“Step away from the machine.”

Daniel looked toward the armed men.

“You built your entire life serving people who planned to replace you.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

“I built my life preparing to become Number One.”

Eleanor studied the rotating mechanism. A faint memory returned—three keys inserted into three separate locks, not to activate the archive, but to divide its power.

“The seals,” she whispered.

Thomas turned toward her.

“What?”

“They were never meant to be combined.”

A stronger memory struck her.

She saw herself decades earlier standing beside the machine with three younger founders. They had separated the activation codes after discovering that one person could use the archive to control the entire city.

Eleanor grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“We need to place each seal in a different chamber.”

Thomas understood immediately.

“The separation protocol.”

Adrian shouted to his guards.

“Stop them!”

The first gunshot shattered a chandelier.

Daniel pulled Eleanor behind the raised platform while Samuel overturned a heavy dining table for cover.

Melissa ran toward the kitchen control panel and activated the fire suppression system.

Water exploded from the ceiling.

The restaurant became chaos.

Guards struggled to see through the spray while alarms echoed through the hall.

Thomas crawled beneath the machine and discovered three narrow slots arranged around its base.

“One seal here!”

Daniel threw him the silver button.

Eleanor carried the iron key toward the opposite side.

But Adrian jumped from the lower balcony and blocked her path.

“You led the Circle once,” he said. “You could lead it again.”

“I led it to destroy it.”

“You failed.”

Eleanor tightened her hand around the key.

“Then I have another chance.”

Adrian reached for her.

Before he could touch her, Victor Kane appeared from the service corridor and tackled him to the floor.

Daniel stared.

Victor was bleeding from one shoulder but still alive.

“Finish it!” he shouted.

The countdown reached five minutes.

Thomas inserted the silver seal.

Eleanor placed the iron key into the second lock.

Daniel searched for the third piece.

Then he realized it was missing.

The second key Thomas had carried was no longer in his hand.

Adrian smiled from beneath Victor.

“You’re looking for this?”

May you like

A blackened key rested between his fingers.
