Chapter 26 - Phase Two Begins
Every monitor in the operations room displayed the same white letters against a black background.
ARCHIVE NODE 3 HAS ACKNOWLEDGED NEW CUSTODIANS.
PROCEED TO PHASE TWO.
No logo.
No sender.
No network address.
Only the message.
The communications technicians immediately disconnected the affected terminals from the airport network, but the words remained on every screen for another twelve seconds before disappearing simultaneously.
Marcus turned toward the lead technician.
"Trace the source."
The technician typed rapidly, his expression growing more confused by the second.
"It didn't come through the airport network."
"Then where?"
"It originated from inside the legacy archive system."
Arthur let out a slow breath.
"So it finally woke up."
Dana looked at him sharply.
"Woke up?"
Arthur nodded.
"Daniel believed the archive wasn't just a collection of evidence."
Marcus frowned.
"What else would it be?"
"A safeguard."
The room fell silent.
Arthur continued.
"He designed part of the recovery process so that if enough verified evidence was assembled in one place, hidden instructions would activate automatically."
Marcus looked back at the blank monitors.
"So Phase Two wasn't triggered by a person."
"It was triggered by progress."
Meanwhile, Victor quietly watched everyone from the interview room. For the first time, Marcus realized Victor wasn't surprised by the announcement.
He seemed disappointed.
As though something had happened sooner than expected.
Marcus entered the interview room.
"You wanted Node 3."
Victor smiled faintly.
"No."
"You wanted to stop it."
Victor didn't answer.
Marcus placed Rebecca's letter on the table.
"You've been chasing the archives for years."
Victor finally spoke.
"I wasn't chasing the archives."
"What were you chasing?"
"The key."
Marcus held his gaze.
"And what is the key?"
Victor looked toward Eleanor through the glass.

"You've been protecting it since the day Daniel died."
