Chapter 39 - The Apartment Key

The brass key found inside the anonymous envelope remained on the evidence table.

Samuel picked it up carefully.

"I know this key."

Marcus frowned.

"You've seen it before?"

Samuel nodded.

"It hangs on a wooden hook inside my apartment."

Silence filled the room.

"You mean..."

"I already own another one exactly like it."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Daniel..."

Marcus looked toward Samuel.

"Did anyone ever tell you what it opened?"

"No."

"Did you ever try?"

Samuel laughed softly.

"I did once."

"And?"

"It didn't fit any lock."

Arthur nodded knowingly.

"Because you were using it on doors."

Marcus remembered the inscription.

The key opens memory—not locks.

The forensic analyst compared the brass key with high-resolution photographs of Daniel's pocket watch, the microfilm container, and the silver thimble.

Every object shared the same microscopic engraving hidden beneath years of wear.

Not a serial number.

A musical notation.

The analyst enlarged the pattern.

"It's incomplete."

Samuel reached into his backpack.

"I think I have something."

From a side pocket he removed an old harmonica wrapped in faded cloth.

"My grandfather gave me this too."

Marcus examined it.

The metal cover carried identical engraving.

When placed beside the brass key, the musical notation continued perfectly from one object to the other.

Arthur whispered,

"They were never keepsakes."

May you like

"They were fragments."
