Chapter 31 - The Sound Behind the Door

The room became quiet.
Marcus frowned.
"You remember the sound?"
Eleanor nodded.
"It wasn't an ordinary lock."
Arthur looked at the key more closely.
"Listen."
He gently tapped it against the steel evidence table.
A clear metallic tone echoed through the room.
Marcus noticed something unusual.
The key vibrated longer than expected.
The forensic analyst scanned it.
"It isn't solid brass."
"What is it?"
"A layered alloy."
Marcus examined the grooves beneath magnification.
Tiny etched lines covered one side of the key.
They weren't decorative.
They formed an extremely small waveform.
Dana looked puzzled.
"A sound pattern?"
The analyst nodded.
"It may not just unlock something."
Marcus remembered Daniel's words.
The key opens memory—not locks.
"What if this isn't meant for a door at all?"
Arthur slowly smiled.
"Now you're asking Daniel's kind of questions."
Before anyone could continue, the airport communications center called again.
The technician answered, then looked toward Marcus with obvious concern.
"We've just received another automated message from Archive Node 3."
"What does it say?"
The technician read the screen carefully.
> Custodian verification incomplete.
>
> One required participant is still absent.
>
> Estimated arrival updated.
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Updated to when?"
The technician swallowed.
"The system predicts Samuel Whitmore will arrive at the airport..."
May you like
He looked back at the display.
"...in less than two hours."
