Chapter 27 - The Key Nobody Recognized
Marcus returned to the inspection room carrying Victor's latest statement.
Dana immediately looked at Eleanor.
"Did Daniel leave you anything besides what's already in the suitcase?"
Eleanor slowly shook her head.
"I've shown you everything."
Arthur wasn't convinced.
"He may have left something you never realized was important."
The investigators began examining every personal item Eleanor carried.
Her handbag.
Her wallet.
Her glasses case.
A small sewing kit.
A worn address book filled with handwritten phone numbers.
Nothing appeared unusual.
Then Marcus noticed the silver thimble resting inside the sewing kit.
It looked old, almost polished smooth from decades of use.
"Eleanor," Marcus asked gently, "how long have you had this?"
She smiled sadly.
"Daniel gave it to me on our first anniversary."
Marcus rolled it between his fingers.
It felt heavier than expected.
The forensic analyst scanned it with a portable density meter.
"It's hollow."
Dana raised an eyebrow.
"Hollow?"
Marcus carefully examined the inside rim.
Tiny grooves formed what appeared to be a hidden threading mechanism.
Using a rubber grip, he slowly twisted the top.
The thimble separated into two pieces.
Inside rested a tightly rolled strip of translucent film.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus carefully unrolled it beneath an evidence light.
It wasn't writing.
It was microfilm.
Arthur smiled for the first time that day.
"Daniel never trusted obvious hiding places."
The technician immediately prepared a scanner.
As the image appeared on the monitor, everyone leaned closer.
Rows of filing cabinets filled the screen.
Each cabinet carried a number.
At the center of the image stood a steel door marked with a familiar symbol.
The same symbol Daniel had drawn beside Archive Node 3.
Across the bottom edge of the microfilm appeared a handwritten sentence.
The key opens memory—not locks.
Marcus looked toward Victor through the glass.
