Chapter 33 - The Watch That Started Ticking

Marcus returned to Daniel's silver pocket watch.
Ever since opening it, the hands had remained frozen at 8:47.
He picked it up once more.
Without warning—
Tick.
Everyone looked up.
The second hand moved.
One second.
Then another.
Eleanor gasped.
"It hasn't worked in twelve years."
Marcus turned the watch over.
He hadn't wound it.
No one had touched the mechanism.
Yet it continued ticking steadily.
The forensic analyst scanned it again.
"No magnetic activation."
"No electronic trigger."
Dana frowned.
"Then why now?"
Arthur stared at the moving hands.
"Because the countdown has begun."
Marcus wasn't interested in symbolism.
He listened carefully.
Between each tick came another sound.
A faint metallic click.
Perfectly rhythmic.
The analyst placed the watch beneath an audio microscope.
A waveform appeared on the monitor.
Not random.
The clicks followed a repeating sequence.
Long.
Short.
Short.
Long.
Marcus leaned closer.
"Morse code?"
The technician decoded the pattern.
Four letters appeared.
E A S T
Dana immediately unfolded Daniel's blueprint.
Only one tunnel was marked with that direction.
The eastern maintenance corridor.
The same corridor officially sealed nine years earlier.
Marcus looked toward the operations team.
"I want every historical maintenance file for the east tunnel."
Before anyone moved, the watch clicked once more.
This time...
the hands stopped again.
May you like
Exactly at 9:13.
