Chapter 40 - The Melody Daniel Left Behind
The harmonica rested quietly on the evidence table.
Samuel hesitated.
"I only know one tune Grandpa ever taught me."
Marcus looked at him.
"Can you play it?"
Samuel nodded.
"It's simple."
He raised the harmonica to his lips.
The first note echoed gently through the operations room.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Nothing happened.
Samuel continued.
Halfway through the melody, the archive terminal emitted a sharp electronic tone.
Every monitor flickered.
The progress bar moved again.
Identity Verification: 3 of 5 Complete.
The technicians stared in disbelief.
"It reacted to the music."
Samuel lowered the harmonica slowly.
"I've played this song hundreds of times."
Arthur smiled sadly.
"But never here."
A printer connected to the legacy system suddenly came to life.
Without receiving any command, it began producing a single sheet of paper.
Marcus lifted it while the ink was still drying.
Across the top appeared a title.
Custodian Sequence — Step Four
Below it was only one instruction.
> Before the fourth identity can be verified, return the melody to the place where it was first recorded.
Dana looked toward Arthur.
"You know where that is."
Arthur remained silent for several seconds before nodding.
"I hoped we'd never have to go back."
Marcus folded the page.
"Back where?"
Arthur looked from Samuel to Eleanor, then toward the blueprint Daniel had hidden beneath the notebook.
"The airport wasn't where Daniel created the archive."
He tapped a small handwritten circle near the edge of the map.
"It was where he hid it."
Marcus followed Arthur's finger to the circle.
Until that moment, everyone had assumed it marked another storage location.
Looking more closely, Marcus realized it wasn't a building at all.
