Chapter 25 - The Voice on the Tape

The restoration specialist carefully inserted the cleaned cassette into an archival player.
Static filled the room.
Then came Elena's voice.
Calm.
Focused.
Professional.
"If this recording exists, my written notes were not enough."
Arthur closed his eyes.
He had not heard his daughter's voice in more than two decades.
"I've attended three meetings," the recording continued.
"They never use real names."
A chair scraped somewhere in the background.
Another man's voice entered the recording.
"I've confirmed the shipment."
Then silence.
Elena whispered again.
"The man everyone calls Chairman always waits before speaking."
Several more seconds passed.
Finally another voice emerged.
It was older.
Lower.
Measured.
No threats.
No anger.
Yet every word carried quiet authority.
"Loose ends create unnecessary attention."
Arthur's eyes opened immediately.
Mercer noticed.
"You recognize him?"
Arthur answered slowly.
"I recognize the manner."
The tape continued.
"We proceed only when patience becomes profitable."
The voice stopped.
Another person answered.
"Understood."
Then the recording ended abruptly with loud interference.
The audio specialist rewound the tape.
"There's something else."
He isolated a faint sound buried beneath the voices.
Tick...
Tick...
Tick...
A mechanical clock.
Arthur leaned toward the speaker.
"I've heard that clock before."
Mercer looked at him expectantly.
"Where?"
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he stared at Elena's sketch of the lakeside mansion.
Then the memory surfaced.
"The grandfather clock."
He looked at Collins.
"The one in the entrance hall of Blackwood Estate."
Collins' expression changed.
"I thought that mansion had been abandoned years ago."
Arthur folded Elena's map and slipped it into his coat.
"So did everyone else."
Outside the headquarters windows, rain began falling again.
Miles away, hidden behind iron gates and towering trees, an old grandfather clock echoed through the entrance hall of a forgotten mansion.
Someone standing beside it quietly extinguished a candle.
Then, without speaking a word, they looked toward a wall covered with old photographs.
Arthur Hale's picture had just been pinned beside Elena's.

Under both photographs, a fresh handwritten note had been added.
They've found the first door.
