Chapter 28 - The Recorded Invitation

Every weapon in the room was raised toward the darkness.
"Show yourself!" Mercer ordered.
No answer came.
Instead, the voice continued with remarkable composure.
"If you are hearing this recording, then you solved Elena's final puzzle."
Arthur recognized immediately that the message was pre-recorded.
The pauses were too precise.
The timing too deliberate.
"It isn't live," he said.
Mercer lowered his weapon slightly.
The recording continued.
"You've spent more than two decades searching for answers."
A soft click echoed through the chamber.
One wall slowly shifted backward, revealing a hidden archive lined with shelves of sealed document boxes.
Collins stared in disbelief.
"There must be hundreds."
Arthur stepped closer.
Each box carried only a year.
1998.
1999.
2000.
And continuing almost to the present day.
Someone had documented decades of activity.
The voice resumed.
"Truth is rarely destroyed."
"It is merely relocated."
Arthur carefully opened the nearest box.
Inside were financial records.
Photographs.
Meeting notes.
Personal correspondence.
Nothing appeared random.
Everything had been meticulously indexed.
Mercer removed another folder.
His eyes widened.
"This isn't just evidence."
Arthur looked over.
"What is it?"
Mercer slowly turned the page.
"They've been investigating themselves."
The archive contained internal reports on members who had broken organizational rules.
Some names were crossed out.
Others marked "Removed."
A few bore only one word.
Missing.
Collins opened another cabinet.
Behind it rested dozens of digital storage drives labeled with years stretching back more than twenty years.
"This could expose everything."
Arthur remained cautious.
"Or lead us exactly where someone wants us."
Before anyone could examine further, Reeves' radio crackled.
"Chief..."
Static interrupted the transmission.
Then his voice returned.
"We've lost contact with the outside teams."
Mercer grabbed his own radio.
"Unit One, respond."
Nothing.
"Unit Two."
Silence.
Only static.
Arthur looked toward the tunnel leading back to the surface.
"They've isolated us."
Then, from somewhere deep beneath the mansion, came the slow, unmistakable sound of a grandfather clock striking the hour.
One...
Two...
Three...
Its echo rolled through the underground chamber like a warning from another age.
Arthur quietly closed the evidence box in front of him.
"The game has entered its next move."
May you like
Far above them, hidden somewhere within the mansion, a floorboard creaked.
Someone else was still inside the estate.
