Chapter 29 - The Second Level

The final echo of the grandfather clock faded into silence.

No one moved.

Chief Mercer slowly swept his flashlight across the ceiling. The underground chamber stretched far beyond the limits shown on Elena's sketches. Whoever had expanded the estate had done so with military precision.

"Everyone stay together," Mercer ordered.

Director Collins assigned two federal agents to secure the archive while the others examined the newly discovered passage hidden behind the moving wall.

Arthur stood quietly near the chessboard.

His attention wasn't on the documents.

It was on the floor.

He crouched with visible effort, running two fingers just above the stone without touching it.

"The dust is different."

Mercer walked over.

"Different how?"

"Someone crossed here less than an hour ago."

The footprints weren't obvious. Only a faint disturbance in decades of settled dust revealed a narrow path leading toward the rear corridor.

Arthur followed it with his flashlight.

"It isn't random."

The trail stopped before a tall wooden bookcase.

Mercer pushed against it.

Nothing.

Reeves checked the hinges.

"No mechanism."

Arthur looked up.

"Not the bookcase."

He pointed toward an old brass wall sconce beside it.

"The light fixture."

Mercer twisted it carefully.

A heavy click echoed through the chamber.

The entire bookcase slid sideways, revealing a narrow staircase descending even deeper underground.

Cold air rushed upward.

Unlike the upper tunnels, this air smelled clean.

Fresh.

Ventilated.

Someone had maintained this level.

Reeves looked at Mercer.

"This place is much larger than the blueprints."

Arthur nodded.

"Because the blueprints were never complete."

Mercer studied him.

"You knew there was another level."

"I suspected."

"You never mentioned it."

Arthur looked into the darkness below.

"I never found it."

As the team prepared to descend, Collins noticed a brass plaque mounted beside the hidden staircase.

Most of the letters had faded.

Only three words remained legible.

Private Council Chamber.

No one spoke.

The title matched nothing found in Elena's journal.

Whatever waited below had been hidden even from many members of the organization.
