Chapter 41 - The Vanishing Archive
No one spoke during the drive back to Blackwood Estate.
The Grayhaven Bureau convoy moved through the forest in tense silence while rain drummed steadily against the windshields. Arthur sat beside Chief Mercer, turning the Keeper's Journal over in his hands without opening it again.
"They wanted us to find it," Mercer finally said.
Arthur nodded.
"They wanted us to find it after they had already taken something else."
When the convoy reached the estate, the front gates stood open.
Not forced.
Opened.
As though someone had expected them to return.
Inside the underground archive, rows of shelves remained exactly where the team had left them only hours earlier.
The document boxes were still there.
The digital storage drives remained stacked in their cabinets.
Nothing appeared disturbed.
Director Collins frowned.
"Then what disappeared?"
One of the forensic analysts hurried toward them carrying a portable scanner.
"The boxes are empty."
Mercer pulled open the nearest container.
Nothing.
He opened another.
Empty.
Every folder.
Every photograph.
Every handwritten report.
Gone.
Only blank divider sheets remained.
Arthur slowly walked down the center aisle.
His eyes never stopped moving.
"They didn't steal the archive."
Mercer looked at him.
"They replaced it."
Arthur stopped before Cabinet Twelve.
A faint scratch crossed one of the brass handles.
He reached inside and removed a single sheet of white paper hidden behind the rear panel.
Unlike the others, this page contained handwriting.
Only one sentence.
You are finally looking in the correct direction.
No signature.
No date.
Collins examined the paper.
"They left this for you."
Arthur folded it carefully.
"No."
"They left it for whoever reached this room alive."
At the far end of the archive, Reeves called everyone over.
One wall had begun sliding open by itself.
Behind it stretched a corridor that had not appeared on any blueprint recovered from the estate.
Cold air drifted through the opening.
Unlike the tunnels above, this passage smelled of fresh earth.
