Chapter 43 - The Last Custodian

Back at Grayhaven Bureau Headquarters, the recovered memory card was isolated inside the digital forensics laboratory.
No one touched the network.
No outside connections were permitted.
The analyst inserted the card into an offline workstation.
One video file appeared.
No title.
No timestamp.
Arthur watched without speaking.
The recording showed an elderly man seated inside the Hall of Mirrors.
His white hair was neatly combed.
His posture was calm.
Behind him stood the same obsidian walls the investigators had just left.
The man looked directly into the camera.
"If you are seeing this," he began, "then I am already gone."
Mercer frowned.
"Who is he?"
Arthur stared at the screen.
"I don't know."
The man continued.
"My name is Elias Rowan."
"I was never a leader."
"I was the last Custodian."
He slowly placed a weathered journal onto the desk.
"My duty was never to protect the Council."
"My duty was to preserve its history so that one day someone honest would understand how easily power grows when ordinary people stop asking difficult questions."
Collins leaned closer.
"So he turned against them."
Arthur remained silent.
Elias Rowan continued speaking.
"The Council you are searching for no longer exists in the form you imagine."
"It dissolved years ago."
"What remains are fragments."
"Some seek influence."
"Some seek wealth."
"Some seek revenge."
"But all of them fear one thing."
He paused.
"The complete record."
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"The archive wasn't destroyed."
On the screen, Elias almost seemed to answer him.
"It was never stored in one place."
The old Custodian smiled faintly.
"If Arthur Hale is among those watching..."
Arthur's breathing slowed.
"...tell him Elena understood the final lesson before I did."
The recording ended.
The room remained silent for several long seconds.
Mercer looked toward Arthur.
"What was the final lesson?"
Arthur gazed at the blank monitor.
"It wasn't about finding the people behind the Council."
He gently closed the Keeper's Journal.
"It was about making sure no one could ever build it again."
Before anyone could respond, the secure communications console chimed.
A new anonymous message had arrived.
No sender.
No traceable route.

Only seven words appeared on the screen.
The final archive is waiting beneath Grayhaven.
