Chapter 35 - The Ranger Station Door

Arthur walked through the rain with his cane in one hand and his shoulders perfectly straight.
Behind the trees, Chief Mercer raised his weapon and silently ordered his team to hold position. Every instinct told him to pull Arthur back, but something in the old man's posture stopped him.
This was not recklessness.
It was calculation.
The ranger station door opened before Arthur reached the steps.
A man in a dark coat stood inside, holding Eli by the back of his hoodie. The boy's cheek was red, but his eyes were alert. He had been scared, yes, but he had also been watching.
Learning.
Surviving.
"Arthur Hale," the man said. "Older than expected."
Arthur stopped at the bottom step.
"And you are less impressive than your message suggested."
The man's smile faded.
"You brought officers."
"You kidnapped a child."
"He was already part of the matter."
Arthur's eyes sharpened.
"No child is part of your games."
The man pushed Eli slightly forward.
"Then answer a question, Judge Hale. Why did your daughter hide his family name in her files?"
Arthur did not react, but the words struck deep.
Eli looked confused.
"My family?"
The man smiled again.
"Nobody told you, did they?"
Arthur raised one hand gently toward Eli.
"Do not listen to him."
"But it's true," the man said. "His mother knew Elena. His mother kept something for her."
Mercer's grip tightened around his weapon from the tree line.
Arthur understood the trap now. They had not taken Eli simply to threaten him.
They wanted Arthur to ask questions in the wrong order.
"What do you want?" Arthur asked.
The man reached into his coat and removed a sealed envelope.
"The Founder wants the notebook from Blackwood Estate."
Arthur did not blink.
"Then the Founder should have asked politely twenty-two years ago."
The man's patience cracked.
"You think this is still about justice?"
"No," Arthur said. "I think it was never about justice for you."
Lightning flashed over the trees.
For one second, Arthur saw the reflection in the station window.
Another man stood behind the first, holding a weapon low near his leg.
Arthur tapped his cane once against the wooden step.
That was the signal.

Mercer's team moved.
