Chapter 13 - The First Lesson

The chandeliers remained dark.
Only the faint glow from emergency lights along the walls illuminated Mercer House, casting long shadows across the ancient dining room.
Daniel stood motionless.
Victor Lang slowly removed his leather gloves and placed them neatly on the center table, directly beside the open guest ledger.
Around him, the masked waiters remained perfectly still.
None of them appeared armed.
None of them needed to be.
Their discipline alone was unsettling.
"You've grown exactly as I expected," Victor said.
Daniel clenched his fists.
"You manipulated my entire life."
Victor smiled.
"I protected your life."
"You lied to me."
"I selected which truths you were ready to hear."
Claire struggled against the two masked waiters restraining her.
"Don't listen to him, Daniel!"
Victor barely glanced at her.
"I have listened to fear long enough."
He walked toward the open ledger.
Daniel instinctively stepped between Victor and the book.
Victor stopped only inches away.
"Interesting."
"What?"
"You chose the ledger."
Daniel frowned.
"I don't understand."
"Neither did your father."
Victor looked around the room.
"This building has never been a restaurant."
Daniel stared.
"What?"
"It has always been an examination."
Silence settled over Mercer House.
Victor continued calmly.
"Every employee..."
He pointed toward the kitchen.
"...every manager..."
Then toward the dining room.
"...every wealthy guest..."
Finally toward Daniel.
"...and every member of the Mercer family has been tested here."
Daniel shook his head.
"Tested for what?"
Victor reached into his jacket and produced a brass coin.
One side displayed the restaurant's original emblem.
The other showed the silver crest.
"The ability to choose."
He placed the coin into Daniel's hand.
"When your father stood where you are standing now, he chose compassion."
Daniel looked down at the coin.
"And you?"
Victor answered without hesitation.
"I chose survival."
Elias suddenly stepped forward.
"Thomas never betrayed the Trust."
Victor sighed.
"No."
"He refused to weaponize it."
Victor slowly nodded.
"Exactly."
The room became silent again.
Daniel looked from one man to the other.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor folded his hands behind his back.
"The Trust was never created merely to protect this restaurant."
He gestured toward the massive guest ledger.
"It was designed to identify extraordinary people."
Claire interrupted.
"People under pressure."
Victor nodded.
"The poor reveal generosity."
"The powerful reveal arrogance."
"The desperate reveal loyalty."
"The frightened reveal truth."
Daniel remembered humiliating Mrs. Whitmore on the terrace.
His chest tightened.
"I failed."
Victor smiled.
"You believe that because you only saw one examination."
He leaned closer.
"But yours has only just begun."
At that moment the guest ledger turned a page by itself.
No one touched it.
Names slowly appeared across the blank paper.
Dozens of them.
Every employee currently working in the restaurant.
Beside each name, a number began changing.
92...
61...
14...
78...
Daniel's own number remained blank.
Elias looked horrified.
"It has activated."
Victor nodded.
"The Evaluation has started."
Before anyone could ask another question, every masked waiter knelt simultaneously.
Somewhere beneath Mercer House, a massive bell rang once.
The old building trembled.
Then another hidden doorway slowly opened behind Victor.
Beyond it waited a narrow corridor illuminated by blue lights.
Victor stepped aside.

"Welcome to Phase Two."
