Chapter 21 - The Forgotten Wing

The first impact shook the library.
Dust drifted from the vaulted ceiling.
Daniel instinctively reached for the blank journal.
The Keeper stopped him.
"Not yet."
Another impact followed.
The bronze doors bent inward.
"They cannot enter until someone inside gives permission."
Daniel looked confused.
"Then we're safe."
"No."
She smiled faintly.
"You already invited one of them."
Daniel searched his memory.
No names.
No greetings.
Nothing.
Then he remembered Victor's words.
Welcome to Phase Two.
The Keeper noticed the realization in his eyes.
"You accepted an invitation."
"I didn't know."
"Intent has never mattered here."
The doors opened a few inches.
A narrow beam of white light entered the library.
Someone spoke from outside.
"Keeper."
Her face remained expressionless.
"I retired long ago."
"We never accepted your resignation."
The voice belonged to the woman in white.
Daniel frowned.
"I thought she wanted to destroy the Trust."
"So she believes."
The Keeper sighed.
"She only knows half the truth."
She led Daniel toward a spiral staircase hidden behind the shelves.
"The Council protects history."
"Victor manipulated history."
"And you?"
Daniel asked.
"What am I supposed to do?"
She smiled.
"Decide whether history deserves another guardian."
The staircase descended into darkness.
As they began walking, Daniel noticed hundreds of framed portraits lining the walls.
Every face looked different.
Teachers.
Nurses.
Factory workers.
Soldiers.
Children.
None appeared wealthy.
Beneath every portrait was the same inscription.
They Chose Someone Else Before Themselves.
Daniel stopped before the final empty frame.
Its brass plaque already carried his name.
No portrait.
Not yet.
The Keeper quietly whispered,
"Every guardian earns the frame."
Suddenly the empty frame cracked.
A bullet shattered the glass.
Someone had fired from inside the library.
The Keeper turned sharply.
May you like
"There shouldn't be anyone behind us."
