Chapter 17 - Beneath Mercer House

Without hesitation, Samuel jumped after the falling ledger.

"Samuel!" Claire shouted.

Daniel followed immediately.

Victor made no attempt to stop either of them.

Instead, he calmly stepped onto a narrow iron staircase hidden beneath the broken floor.

"Come."

The chamber below was unlike anything Daniel expected.

It was enormous.

Far larger than the restaurant above.

Ancient brick arches stretched into darkness.

Hundreds of wooden tables stood arranged in perfect rows.

Each table held a single candle.

Every candle was burning.

Elias stopped walking.

"I haven't seen this room in forty years."

Claire whispered.

"This is the original hall."

Victor nodded.

"The first Mercer House."

Samuel found the guest ledger lying untouched upon a circular stone platform.

Surrounding it were twelve empty wooden chairs.

Each bore a brass nameplate.

Founder.

Witness.

Guardian.

Judge.

Keeper.

The remaining titles had faded with time.

Daniel walked toward one chair.

As his fingers brushed the wood, a hidden mechanism clicked.

One wall slowly opened.

Behind it stretched shelves filled with journals.

Thousands of them.

Each spine bore a different year.

1898.

1899.

1900.

1901.

1902.

1903.

Every generation of the Trust had recorded its decisions.

Claire carefully removed one journal.

Inside were handwritten accounts of ordinary people.

A widow denied food.

A wealthy banker who secretly paid workers' debts.

A frightened child who later became a judge.

None of the entries contained surnames.

Only choices.

Victor looked around the vast chamber.

"This place never preserved wealth."

"It preserved character."

Daniel remained unconvinced.

"Then why manipulate families?"

Victor lowered his eyes.

"Because somewhere along the way..."

He paused.

"...we stopped studying character."

"We began controlling it."

Silence filled the hall.

Even Victor seemed unable to defend what the Trust had become.

Then one of the candles suddenly went out.

Then another.

And another.

Elias looked toward the far end of the chamber.

"They're here."

Daniel followed his gaze.

Dozens of silhouettes emerged from the darkness.

All wore identical silver crests.

None carried weapons.

Each carried a leather journal.

At their center walked a woman dressed entirely in white.

Victor's confidence disappeared instantly.

He whispered only two words.

May you like

"The Council."
