Chapter 7 - The Woman Inside the Vault

Daniel stumbled forward and hit the floor.

The vault was larger than he expected, filled with servers, locked cabinets, and blinking control panels. The air was freezing.

The person who had pulled him inside stood near the door.

She was a woman in her forties, wearing a black coat and leather gloves. A thin line of blood ran from her temple.

Daniel pushed himself up.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Claire Mercer.”

He froze.

“My mother’s name was Helen.”

“Your father had a sister.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You’re my aunt?”

“Possibly.”

“That is not an answer.”

Claire looked toward the countdown screen.

08:41

“There is no time for a family explanation. The purge will erase everything in this room, including the original transfer records.”

She moved to a terminal and inserted a small device.

Outside the vault, Adrian struck the metal door.

“Daniel!”

“I’m all right!” he shouted.

Claire typed rapidly.

“You are not all right. None of us are.”

She opened a cabinet and removed a red folder.

On the cover was Daniel’s childhood photograph.

Inside were pages documenting his life from birth.

Every address.

Every school.

Every job.

Every mistake.

Daniel felt sick.

“Why were they watching me?”

“Because the trust made you dangerous.”

“I didn’t even know it existed.”

“That made you easier to control.”

Daniel remembered the manager recommending him for employment two years earlier. At the time, he had believed it was luck.

“Malcolm hired me on purpose.”

Claire nodded.

“He wanted you close. Poor, insecure, dependent on the job, and desperate to impress wealthy customers. He shaped you into the exact person who would eventually violate the promise.”

Daniel’s shame deepened.

“Tonight was planned?”

“Not completely. Mrs. Whitmore’s arrival forced them to move faster.”

The countdown reached seven minutes.

Claire opened a hidden compartment beneath the terminal and pulled out a portable drive.

“This contains proof that the restaurant is only one part of a larger network.”

“What network?”

“Luxury businesses used to identify vulnerable people, gather information, and influence judges, officials, investors, and politicians.”

Daniel stared through the small reinforced window in the vault door.

Malcolm was shouting at Adrian, but the glass blocked the sound.

“Is Malcolm in charge?”

Claire’s expression darkened.

“No. Malcolm is frightened because the real owner is coming.”

A warning light flashed.

REMOTE OVERRIDE DETECTED

Claire grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“We have to stop the purge manually.”

She pointed toward a narrow maintenance hatch behind the servers.

Daniel pulled it open.

A ladder descended into darkness.

“Where does that go?”

“To the original foundation tunnel.”

“And what is down there?”

Claire handed him a flashlight.

“Your father’s last message.”

Daniel began climbing down.

Halfway into the tunnel, he heard the vault speaker activate.

The same distorted voice returned.

This time, it spoke without disguise.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

It belonged to a man who had called himself a family friend throughout his childhood.

A man who had attended his mother’s funeral.

“Daniel,” the voice said calmly, “do not trust Claire. She is the reason your father died.”
