Chapter 18 - The Council Arrives

Every member of the Council stopped exactly ten feet from the stone platform.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
The woman in white removed her gloves with deliberate care.
She appeared no older than fifty, though her calm expression suggested decades of authority.
She looked directly at Victor.
"You broke the founding oath."
Victor did not deny it.
"I interpreted it."
"You replaced it."
The woman shifted her attention to Daniel.
"So..."
She studied him for several seconds.
"...the final Mercer has been found."
Daniel frowned.
"You know who I am?"
"We have known since the day you were born."
Claire instinctively stepped closer to Daniel.
"What do you want?"
The woman answered without hesitation.
"The same thing we wanted twenty-two years ago."
Samuel tightened his grip on the ledger.
"And what is that?"
She looked toward the ancient journals surrounding the chamber.
"To end the Trust."
Silence swept through the hall.
Victor laughed quietly.
"So you finally admit it."
"The experiment failed."
The woman nodded.
"It failed because men like you believed people should be engineered instead of trusted."
Victor's smile faded.
Daniel looked between them.
"If everyone agrees it failed..."
He gestured toward the endless underground archive.
"...why continue any of this?"
The woman in white slowly approached the stone platform.
"Because ending an institution is more dangerous than creating one."
She placed an old iron key beside the guest ledger.
"The records hidden beneath Mercer House contain the names of judges, presidents, industrialists, and families whose lives were shaped by this place."
"If those records become public..."
She allowed the sentence to hang in the air.
"...entire governments will begin asking who truly influenced history."
Daniel looked at the key.
"What does it open?"
"The last room."
Victor suddenly stepped forward.
"No."
It was the first time anyone had heard fear in his voice.
The woman met his gaze.
"You know what is inside."
Victor nodded slowly.
Daniel watched the exchange.
For the first time, it became obvious that even Victor feared something buried beneath Mercer House.
The woman turned back to Daniel and gently slid the iron key across the stone.
"It no longer belongs to us."
"It belongs to the one who decides whether the Truth survives."
Before Daniel could touch it, every candle in the chamber extinguished simultaneously.
May you like
Complete darkness swallowed the hall.
Then, from somewhere far below the foundations, a massive iron door slowly began to open.
