Chapter 19 - The Last Door

The deep rumble echoed beneath Mercer House like distant thunder.
No one moved.
The Council remained perfectly still, their white candles extinguished, their faces illuminated only by the emergency lights reflecting off the ancient stone walls.
Daniel stared into the darkness beyond the opening iron door.
A cold wind drifted through the chamber.
It carried the scent of old paper, damp earth... and cedarwood.
The same scent that had lingered on the letter from his father.
Victor's voice became unusually tense.
"Nobody enters that room."
The woman in white looked at him.
"You lost the authority to give orders many years ago."
Victor ignored her.
Instead, he looked directly at Daniel.
"If you walk through that door, everything you believe about your family will change."
Daniel answered quietly.
"It already has."
Without another word, he picked up the iron key.
The moment his fingers closed around it, another mechanism awakened.
Hidden gears turned somewhere beneath the floor.
The guest ledger opened by itself.
Its blank pages filled with handwriting at astonishing speed.
Not names.
Memories.
Daniel recognized scenes from his own childhood.
His first day at school.
His mother's funeral.
His first day working at the restaurant.
Every important decision he had ever made appeared across the pages as though someone had watched his entire life.
Claire stepped closer.
"This isn't recording history."
Samuel slowly shook his head.
"It's predicting it."
Suddenly the writing stopped.
Only one unfinished sentence remained.
The final choice belongs to...
The ink froze.
Waiting.
As though the book itself refused to continue until Daniel acted.
The woman in white pointed toward the doorway.
"The answer has always been inside."
Daniel exchanged one last glance with Claire and Samuel.
Then he crossed the threshold.
May you like
The heavy iron door closed behind him.
