Chapter 8 - The Voice from the Past

Daniel froze on the ladder.
The voice echoing through the narrow tunnel was unmistakable.
For years, Victor Lang had been nothing more than a trusted family friend in Daniel's memories. He had visited every Christmas after Daniel's father supposedly disappeared. He had helped pay for Helen Mercer's funeral. He had even encouraged Daniel to apply for the waiter position at the restaurant two years earlier.
Now his calm voice drifted through hidden speakers beneath the building.
"Step away from Claire," Victor repeated. "She has been lying to you your entire life."
Claire closed the maintenance hatch behind them as another warning alarm echoed through the vault.
"Don't listen to him," she whispered. "He's buying time."
Daniel looked from the darkness below to Claire's anxious face.
"Then tell me the truth."
Claire hesitated for only a second.
"Victor wasn't your father's friend. He was his business partner."
Daniel's grip tightened around the flashlight.
"What happened?"
"They discovered that someone inside the Founding Trust was secretly collecting information on wealthy clients, politicians, judges, and business leaders. The restaurant became the perfect meeting place because nobody suspected a dining room could hide an intelligence network."
Another alarm sounded.
DATA PURGE: 05:41
Claire continued leading Daniel downward through the narrow passage.
The tunnel walls were made of rough stone instead of concrete. Rusted pipes crossed overhead, and old electrical cables disappeared into the darkness.
"This part of the building is over eighty years old," she explained. "Almost nobody knows it exists."
Behind them, heavy footsteps echoed through the vault.
Someone had entered.
Claire switched off her flashlight immediately.
"Quiet."
The footsteps stopped.
Then another flashlight beam swept across the tunnel entrance.
Victor's voice called calmly into the darkness.
"Daniel."
No answer.
"You've spent your whole life wondering why your father abandoned you."
Daniel remained perfectly still.
Victor continued.
"He didn't abandon you."
Claire closed her eyes.
"He sold you."
Daniel felt as if the air had vanished from the tunnel.
"What?"
Claire grabbed his arm.
"He's twisting the story."
But Victor continued speaking.
"Thomas Mercer accepted money to place you under the protection of the Trust. He believed it would keep you alive."
Daniel remembered his mother's tears whenever he asked about his father.
She had never called him cruel.
Only... foolish.
The memory suddenly felt different.
Claire pulled Daniel farther into the tunnel.
"We're almost there."
The passage finally opened into a circular underground chamber.
At its center stood an enormous iron safe surrounded by shelves filled with dusty ledgers, sealed wooden boxes, and dozens of framed photographs.
One photograph caught Daniel's attention immediately.
It showed his father standing beside Mrs. Whitmore, Adrian's father, Elias Crowe...
...and Victor Lang.
All four men were smiling.
Daniel stared at the picture.
"They worked together."
"Yes," Claire admitted quietly.
"But not for long."
Before Daniel could ask another question, the old safe suddenly unlocked by itself with a loud metallic click.
The thick steel door slowly swung open.
Inside rested a single leather journal.
On its cover, written in faded gold lettering, were six words that made both Claire and Daniel stop breathing.

Neither of them noticed the tiny red laser dot slowly appearing on the opposite wall.
Someone else had already found the chamber.
