Chapter 6 - The Elevator Beneath the Kitchen

Emergency lights flickered on along the hallway.
Guests in the dining room began murmuring nervously. Several phones lit up in the darkness, casting pale circles across frightened faces.
Adrian ordered the staff to keep everyone calm.
Malcolm tried to stand, but Daniel held him against the wall.
“What is below us?” Adrian demanded.
Malcolm said nothing.
Elias took the access card.
“The original building had two underground storage levels. During the renovation fourteen years ago, Malcolm submitted plans for an additional archive room.”
“You approved them?” Mrs. Whitmore asked.
“No. The city rejected them.”
Adrian looked toward Malcolm.
“So you built it illegally.”
Malcolm laughed bitterly.
“You think this is about a few false invoices? You have no idea what is stored down there.”
The vibration came again.
This time, glasses trembled on nearby tables.
Elias led them through the kitchen. Behind a row of industrial refrigerators, he found a narrow steel door disguised as part of the wall.
The keycard opened it.
Beyond was a freight elevator with only one visible button.

Mrs. Whitmore stepped inside first.
Adrian followed, then Elias, Daniel, two assistants, and Malcolm, whose hands had been tied with a cloth napkin.
The elevator descended slowly.
Daniel could hear the cables groaning overhead.
“No one ever told the staff about this place,” he said.
“They were not supposed to know,” Malcolm replied.
The doors opened onto a long concrete corridor.
Cold white lights illuminated shelves filled with sealed boxes. Security cameras rotated toward them.
At the far end stood a vault door.
Adrian approached one of the boxes and opened it.
Inside were employee files.
Not ordinary records.
Each folder contained photographs, debts, family information, medical histories, and private messages.
Daniel found his own name.
His folder included copies of rent notices, his mother’s hospital bills, and a disciplinary report from school.
“How did you get this?” he asked.
Malcolm remained silent.
Elias opened another box.
“These are profiles,” he said. “Someone has been collecting weaknesses.”
Mrs. Whitmore looked around the archive.
“For blackmail.”
Adrian picked up a file belonging to a city inspector.
Inside was a photograph of the inspector accepting an envelope.
“That explains how the construction remained hidden.”
A computer screen suddenly switched on inside the vault.
A countdown appeared.

Elias rushed to the keyboard.
“They knew we entered.”
Adrian looked toward the cameras.
“Who are ‘they’?”
Before Malcolm could answer, a speaker crackled above them.
A distorted voice filled the corridor.
“Mrs. Whitmore, you should have stayed away.”
She looked up.
“I have waited twenty-two years to hear that voice again.”
The speaker went silent.
Then the vault door began to close.
Daniel ran toward it.
As he reached the threshold, a hand suddenly appeared from inside the vault and pulled him through.

The steel door slammed shut behind him.
