Chapter 15 - The First Trial

Daniel could not breathe.
The elderly woman's face was thinner than in the faded family photographs his mother had kept hidden inside an old cedar box, but there was no mistaking her gentle eyes.
"My grandmother..." he whispered.
Claire's face turned pale.
"She died before Daniel was born."
Victor folded his hands behind his back.
"That is what everyone was told."
The old woman lifted her head with difficulty.
"I am Eleanor Mercer."
Her voice trembled, yet every word carried surprising strength.
Daniel instinctively stepped toward the widening platform, but the gap between them continued expanding until it became impossible to cross.
Victor spoke calmly.
"The Mercer family has always believed in impossible rescues."
"What do you want?" Daniel demanded.
"A decision."
The mechanical voice returned.
FIRST TRIAL PROTOCOL ACTIVE.
ONE LIFE MAY BE SAVED.
The floor shifted again.
A second chair slowly rose from beneath the platform.
This time, the captive wore a dark business suit.
When the hood was removed, Adrian Vale stared around in confusion.
"Daniel?"
Adrian struggled against the restraints.
"What is this?"
Victor remained perfectly composed.
"The building's fire suppression system has failed."
Red warning lights flashed throughout Mercer House.
Smoke drifted across the ceiling.
"The tunnel beneath the eastern foundation will collapse in exactly eight minutes."
Daniel looked from Adrian to Eleanor.
"What does that have to do with me?"
Victor pointed toward two identical brass levers mounted on opposite walls.
"Each lever unlocks one restraint."
Claire stepped forward.
"This is madness."
"No," Victor replied. "This is history."
Elias lowered his eyes.
"I warned Thomas this day would come."
Daniel turned sharply.
"You knew?"
Elias nodded.
"The founders believed true leadership could only be measured when every option carried loss."
Daniel's voice hardened.
"I'm not playing this game."
Victor smiled faintly.
"Then neither door opens."
Silence settled over the chamber.
The countdown appeared above them.
07:58
Adrian remained surprisingly calm.
"Daniel."
Daniel looked at him.
"Whatever happens... don't let this destroy you."
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"You have your grandfather's eyes."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"There has to be another way."
Samuel had remained unusually quiet.
Now he slowly walked toward the ancient guest ledger.
Something had caught his attention.
"The pages..."
Everyone turned.
Names were disappearing.
Not crossed out.
Erased.
One after another.
Every time the countdown lost another second, another name vanished forever.
Samuel frowned.
"This isn't recording decisions."
Claire moved beside him.
"It's rewriting history."
Victor looked genuinely impressed.
"You noticed faster than I expected."
Samuel met his eyes.
"What happens when a name disappears?"
Victor answered without emotion.
"It becomes as though that person never belonged to the Trust."
"And if Daniel's name disappears?"
Victor remained silent.
May you like
That silence frightened everyone far more than any answer could have.
