Chapter 17 - THE BANK THAT WAS ERASED

Rain continued to drum against the windshield as Daniel steered the car into the underground parking garage beneath Marlowe Global's downtown headquarters. Neither he nor Detective Bennett had spoken for several minutes. Each of them was replaying the same question.

Why would someone continue protecting a safety deposit box belonging to a bank that had ceased to exist eight years ago?

Alex finally broke the silence.

"If the bank closed, shouldn't every deposit box have been emptied?"

Detective Bennett nodded.

"Normally, yes."

"Then the key is useless?"

"Not necessarily."

She removed a folder from her briefcase.

"When a financial institution closes, its assets are transferred to another institution or placed under court supervision. Records remain somewhere."

Daniel looked toward her.

"You already checked."

"I called a contact before we left your apartment."

"And?"

"The official transfer records don't match."

"What do you mean?"

"The bank's customer database exists."

"The building sale exists."

"The employee payroll exists."

She paused.

"But the entire archive for the basement vault disappeared."

Alex frowned.

"Only the vault?"

"Exactly."

Daniel's expression grew more serious.

"Someone didn't erase the bank."

"They erased one specific part of it."

Just then his phone vibrated again.

His assistant sounded unusually tense.

"Sir... I found something."

Daniel activated the speaker.

"Go ahead."

"I searched old newspaper archives."

"For the bank?"

"Yes."

"There was a fire."

Alex looked surprised.

"I never heard about that."

"Almost nobody has."

The assistant continued.

"It happened two weeks before the bank officially closed."

"Minor electrical fire."

"No injuries."

"No money reported missing."

Detective Bennett quietly interrupted.

"And the basement?"

Silence.

Then the assistant answered.

"Every article avoids mentioning it."

Daniel slowly leaned back.

"A fire with no investigation."

"A vault with no records."

"And a key that someone hid for years."

Alex looked down at the small brass key resting inside the evidence pouch.

For the first time, it no longer looked ordinary.

It looked like a message that had survived when everything else had been erased.

Before anyone could continue, another notification arrived.

Hospital Security.

Daniel opened it immediately.

Hannah had remembered something else.

Only three words appeared in the report.

Basement. Red Door. D-17.

The three of them exchanged silent glances.

Whatever Hannah had remembered...

...connected the bank, the key, and the missing vault.
