Chapter 19 - THE LOCKED ARCHIVE

The echo of the heavy metal door lingered through the underground archive long after it had slammed shut.
No one moved.
Daniel instinctively stepped in front of Alex while Detective Bennett slowly reached for the flashlight hanging from her belt.
"Did anyone else hear that?" the maintenance employee asked, his voice noticeably weaker.
Everyone nodded.
The lights flickered again.
Then stabilized.
Daniel checked his phone once more.
Still no signal.
"These archive rooms shouldn't lose reception," he muttered.
Detective Bennett walked toward the security panel beside the entrance.
The digital display was completely black.
"No power?"
Daniel looked around.
"The lights are still on."
"So only the security system failed."
Alex glanced toward the corridor where the door had closed.
"Or someone turned it off."
Silence settled over the room.
The maintenance employee swallowed nervously.
"I'll go check."
"You won't go alone," Bennett replied.
The four of them moved carefully between rows of aging shelves. Dust floated through the flashlight beams, making every step feel slower than the last.
The corridor ended at the steel door.
It was closed.
Daniel grabbed the handle.
Locked.
"It shouldn't lock automatically," the maintenance worker whispered.
Bennett examined the electronic keypad.
"No signs of damage."
Daniel frowned.
"It accepted someone's authorization."
Alex looked down.
"There are footprints."
Everyone lowered their flashlights.
A thin layer of dust covered the concrete floor.
Only one fresh trail crossed it.
Someone had walked toward the locked door within the last few hours.
But there was no second trail leading back.
The person had entered...
...and never returned.
The maintenance worker's face turned pale.
"There's no other exit."
Daniel wasn't convinced.
"There has to be."
Bennett photographed every footprint before crouching beside the wall.
Her flashlight reflected against something metallic hidden beneath decades of dust.
"A rail."
She brushed away the dirt.
A narrow steel track ran into the wall itself.
"This wasn't designed as an ordinary storage room."
Daniel slowly nodded.
"It's a movable archive."
The maintenance worker stared in disbelief.
"I've worked here eleven years."
"I never knew."
Daniel stepped backward, scanning the surrounding shelves.
"Someone wanted this section forgotten."
Before anyone could continue, a faint mechanical sound echoed behind the wall.
Click.
Then another.
Click.
The steel door unlocked by itself.
Without anyone touching it.
It slowly opened inward.
Behind it...
...wasn't another archive.
It was an elevator.
May you like
One that did not appear on any building blueprint Daniel had ever seen.
