Chapter 28 - THE MEMORY THAT DIDN’T FIT

The radio crackled again, and Donovan’s voice became clearer.
“Alex, listen carefully. They will try to convince you that memory is truth. It is not. Memory can be shaped. Protected. Buried. Sometimes, it can even be replaced.”
Alex stood frozen in the center of the reconstructed bedroom, still holding the red toy car in his hand.
Daniel looked at him carefully.
“Alex?”
“I remember losing this,” Alex whispered. “I remember crying because it was the last gift my grandfather gave me before he got sick.”
The radio hissed.
Donovan continued.
“You were not chosen because you were special. You were hidden because someone else was.”
Bennett stepped closer to the bookshelf, searching for the source of the broadcast.
“This isn’t a live transmission,” she said. “It’s automated.”
Daniel frowned. “Triggered by the toy?”
“Maybe.”
Alex looked around the room again. Everything felt familiar, but now the familiarity became frightening. The bed. The desk. The wallpaper. The lamp. Every detail felt like a memory someone had stolen from inside his skull and rebuilt underground.
Then the closet door opened by itself.
Slowly.
Alex backed away.
Inside the closet, instead of clothes, stood a narrow metal cabinet. On its front was a digital keypad and one engraved label.
CARTER / PRE-ADOPTION RECORD
Alex stared at the words.
“Pre-adoption?”
Daniel turned sharply toward him.
“You were adopted?”
Alex shook his head.
“No. My parents died when I was little. My grandfather raised me.”
Donovan’s voice returned through the radio.
“That is what you were told.”
The keypad lit up.
Six blank spaces appeared.
Bennett studied it. “It wants a code.”
Alex barely heard her.
His entire life had shifted beneath his feet.
Then he noticed the red toy car.
On its underside, scratched into the plastic, were six numbers.
61794.
His hands trembled as he typed them in.
The cabinet unlocked.
Inside was a file folder, a hospital bracelet, and a photograph of a newborn baby wrapped in a blue blanket.
On the back of the photo were two names.
One had been crossed out.
May you like
The other remained clearly visible.
Alex Carter.
