Chapter 18 - THE FILE WITH NO AUTHOR

Early the next morning, Daniel escorted Alex into a restricted archive beneath Marlowe Global headquarters. The building above buzzed with executives arriving for meetings, unaware that beneath their feet lay rows of forgotten filing rooms dating back decades.

Only a handful of senior executives still possessed access.

Daniel unlocked the heavy steel door.

Dust filled the air.

Metal shelves stretched into the darkness, lined with thousands of boxed records waiting to be digitized—or forgotten forever.

"I haven't been down here in years," Daniel admitted.

Alex looked around.

"It feels like no one has."

A maintenance employee approached carrying a flashlight.

"Mr. Reed, I located the storage index you requested."

Daniel accepted the yellowed ledger.

"Thank you."

He flipped through hundreds of handwritten entries.

Departments.

Projects.

Internal investigations.

Financial audits.

Then he stopped.

"There."

Alex stepped beside him.

One entry had been crossed out with black ink.

PROJECT ORION

Instead of a file number, only one note remained.

Transferred.

"No destination?" Alex asked.

Daniel shook his head.

"The page was altered."

Detective Bennett, who had arrived moments earlier, examined the paper carefully.

"This wasn't done recently."

"The ink has aged."

Alex looked farther down the page.

Another entry caught his attention.

AUTHOR:

Blank.

"Every report has an author," he said.

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Except this one."

The maintenance employee looked puzzled.

"That's impossible."

"It shouldn't be."

Daniel carefully removed the folder from the shelf behind the ledger.

Unlike every other archive box, it contained only a single gray file.

No classification.

No department seal.

No signatures.

He opened it.

Inside was one typed page.

Nothing more.

Across the top appeared a sentence.

If this file has been opened, containment has already failed.

Alex felt a chill run through him.

The rest of the page had been blacked out decades earlier with thick redaction marks.

Only one paragraph remained readable.

Candidate selection was interrupted before final transfer. Subject remains unidentified. Continue passive observation until activation criteria are met.

Alex stared at the words.

"Candidate?"

Daniel slowly turned toward him.

The room fell silent.

Detective Bennett read the paragraph again.

Then she looked directly at Alex.

"I don't think they were looking for you because of something you did."

Alex frowned.

"What are you saying?"

She lowered the page onto the table.

"I think..."

"...they were looking for you long before you ever knew they existed."

Before anyone could respond, the lights inside the archive flickered once.

Then again.

The maintenance employee looked toward the ceiling.

"That's strange."

Daniel's phone suddenly lost signal.

Detective Bennett checked hers.

No service.

At the far end of the archive corridor...

...a heavy metal door closed by itself with a deep echo that rolled through the underground room.

None of them had opened it.
