Chapter 5 - LILY’S WARNING

The hospital lobby was bright, cold, and full of restless movement. Nurses hurried past with charts. Families sat in stiff plastic chairs, waiting for news that could either save or destroy them. Daniel walked straight to the reception desk, spoke quietly, and within moments a staff member led them through a secured hallway.
Alex followed silently, feeling more out of place with every step.
He still had his airport clothes on. His shoes were scuffed. His bag strap was fraying. Everything around him smelled like disinfectant, expensive coffee, and fear.
Outside an examination room, Lily sat wrapped in a blanket that nearly swallowed her small body. A nurse knelt in front of her with a juice box, but Lily was not drinking. Her red eyes searched the hallway again and again.
Then she saw Alex.
“Alex!”
She ran toward him so suddenly that the nurse stood in alarm. Alex dropped to one knee just in time as Lily crashed into his arms.
“You didn’t leave,” she whispered.
Alex held her carefully. “I told you I wouldn’t.”
Daniel watched them with an expression Alex could not read.
“How’s your mom?” Alex asked gently.
Lily pulled back, her lower lip trembling. “They said she’s sleeping again. Uncle Daniel said she’s strong.”
“She is,” Alex said. “And so are you.”
Lily shook her head. “No, I was scared.”
“Being scared and still asking for help is one of the bravest things a person can do.”
For the first time, Lily’s face softened.
Daniel crouched beside her. “Sweetheart, did anyone talk to you while I was gone?”
Lily’s tiny hands tightened around the blanket.
Alex noticed immediately.
Daniel noticed too.
“Lily,” Daniel said carefully, “you can tell me.”
She looked toward the far end of the hall, then leaned closer.
“A man asked me about Alex.”
Alex went still.
Daniel’s eyes darkened. “What man?”
“I don’t know. He had a gray jacket. He said Alex made Mommy fall.”
Alex felt the air leave his lungs.
“That’s not true,” Lily said quickly, turning to Alex with panic in her eyes. “I told him it’s not true. I told him you helped.”
Daniel stood up slowly.
“What else did he say?”
Lily’s voice became smaller. “He said if I told people the wrong story, Mommy might not get better.”
The hallway seemed to freeze around them.
Alex rose to his feet. “Someone threatened her?”
Daniel turned to the nurse. “Who was allowed near my niece?”
The nurse looked shaken. “Only hospital staff and one man who said he was from airport incident review. He showed identification.”
Daniel’s voice dropped. “There is no airport incident review team assigned yet.”
Alex felt his missed flight, his eviction notice, even the interview fade behind a new and darker fear.
Someone was trying to twist what happened.
And they had started with a child.
Daniel pulled out his phone and stepped aside, speaking in a low, controlled voice. Alex could only catch pieces.
“Security footage… terminal corridor… unauthorized visitor… lock down pediatric access…”
Lily tugged Alex’s sleeve.
“He knew your name,” she whispered.
Alex looked down at her.
“What?”
“The man in the gray jacket,” Lily said. “He said, ‘Alex Carter should have boarded his plane.’”
A cold line ran down Alex’s spine.
Daniel ended his call and returned.
Alex met his eyes.
“This isn’t just about your sister, is it?”
May you like
Daniel did not answer right away.
Then he said, “No. I don’t think it is.”
