Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO SMILED AT THE CAMERA

Nobody in the security room spoke.
The frozen image filled the largest monitor. The man standing in the background appeared completely relaxed, almost amused, as though he had expected someone to review the footage sooner or later. Unlike the others, he made no effort to hide his face.
Hospital Security Chief Martin leaned toward the monitor.
"Can you sharpen that image?"
The technician adjusted the resolution, reducing noise frame by frame. The picture improved slightly, revealing a man in his late fifties with silver hair neatly combed back, wearing an expensive navy overcoat and polished black shoes. Everything about him suggested confidence.
Yet Alex was certain he had never seen him before.
"Run facial recognition," Daniel ordered.
Martin shook his head.
"The airport database won't authorize that without law enforcement."
Daniel reached into his pocket and made another call.
"I'll take responsibility."
While the request was being processed, Alex continued staring at the image.
Something bothered him.
It wasn't the smile.
It was where the man was looking.
"He isn't looking at the surveillance camera," Alex said quietly.
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Alex walked closer.
"Look at the angle."
He pointed toward the monitor.
"If he were looking directly at the ceiling camera, his head would be tilted higher."
The technician measured the camera position against the image.
Alex was right.
"So what was he looking at?" Martin asked.
Alex slowly traced an imaginary line across the screen.
"...Me."
The room became silent again.
The smiling stranger had not acknowledged the surveillance camera.
He had been looking directly toward Alex at the exact moment Lily grabbed his arm.
Almost as though he already knew what Alex was about to do.
Daniel's phone vibrated.
He answered immediately.
"This is Reed."
His expression hardened.
"I understand."
He ended the call.
"The airline confirmed something unusual."
"What?"
"The passenger manifest for Flight 618 was modified less than ten minutes before departure."
Alex looked confused.
"I don't understand."
Daniel turned the phone toward him.
"There was an empty business-class seat reserved under your interview itinerary."
Alex nodded.
"I was upgraded because of the interview."
"Exactly."
Daniel continued.
"But after you missed boarding..."
"...someone requested that your reservation remain active."
Alex blinked.
"That's impossible."
"The system shows your seat was never reassigned."
Martin looked puzzled.
"Why would anyone keep an empty seat on a full flight?"
Daniel slowly folded his arms.
"Unless someone wanted everyone to believe Alex was on that aircraft."
The realization spread across the room.
If anyone had been tracking Flight 618...
...they would have believed Alex had boarded.
Unless they already knew he hadn't.
Before anyone could continue, the technician looked back at his monitor.
"I've got the facial recognition response."
He clicked open the report.
Instead of a name...
One line appeared across the screen.
NO MATCH FOUND.
AUTHORIZED RECORDS REMOVED.
Martin whispered,
"Someone erased him."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Or someone powerful made sure he never officially existed."
At that exact moment, another alert flashed across the system.
ACCESS DETECTED.
UNKNOWN REMOTE CONNECTION.
Someone...
May you like
...was accessing the hospital's security network in real time.
