Chapter 32 - SUBJECT B

The footsteps stopped just outside the nursery entrance.

Daniel instinctively moved toward the doorway while Bennett drew her weapon.

Alex remained beside the crib, unable to stop staring at the second bracelet.

Subject B.

No birth name.

No family name.

No date of discharge.

Only a serial number engraved beneath the plastic.

B-00217.

Bennett whispered, "Someone removed this child's identity completely."

Daniel slowly nodded.

"Or never intended to give one."

Alex searched the folder again.

Most pages had been removed long ago.

Only a single medical chart remained.

Patient A:

Stable.

Patient B:

Transferred.

Transferred where?

The line beneath had been cut away with surgical precision.

Alex looked up.

"Someone didn't just hide information."

"They edited history."

Daniel walked to another cabinet against the wall.

Unlike the others, it remained locked.

Its electronic display was still active.

AUTHORIZED GUARDIAN REQUIRED.

Alex frowned.

"What guardian?"

Before Daniel could answer, the display changed on its own.

Searching...

Guardian Status Updated.

Michael Donovan:

Deceased.

Replacement Guardian:

Pending.

The room fell silent.

Bennett stared at the screen.

"It was waiting."

"For what?"

Daniel whispered.

"For Donovan to die."

Alex slowly looked back at the cabinet.

The display flashed again.

Guardian Assignment Available.

Candidate:

Alex Carter.

His heartbeat accelerated.

"They want me..."

"...to become the guardian?"

The cabinet emitted a soft click.

May you like

Its lock disengaged.
