Chapter 3 - THE MESSAGE FROM NOWHERE

Alex read the message three times before his mind accepted the words.
You need to know who you helped.
His thumb hovered over the screen. For a moment, he wondered if it was a mistake, spam, or some cruel accident of timing. But the message used his name. Mr. Carter. That meant someone knew who he was.
Before he could reply, another message appeared.
This is Daniel Reed. Hannah is my sister. Lily told us what you did. Please do not leave the airport yet.
Alex sat straighter.
Hannah. Lily. Reed.
He looked toward the corridor where the paramedics had taken them. The crowd had already swallowed the traces of the emergency, as if nothing had happened. People were laughing again. Planes were boarding. Life had continued with brutal speed.
Alex typed slowly.
Is Hannah okay?
Three dots appeared.
Then vanished.
Then appeared again.
She is alive. Doctors said the delay could have killed her. Lily found you in time. You stayed when others didn’t.
Alex swallowed hard. Relief hit him first, then exhaustion, then the sick reality of what he had lost.
I’m glad she’s alive, he replied. That’s what matters.
He almost put the phone away, but Daniel responded immediately.
Where are you now?
Gate 42.
Stay there. Someone is coming.
Alex frowned. Someone? Why?
No answer came.
He looked around the terminal, suddenly aware of how strange he must appear: a young man sitting alone with a faded bag, a missed flight, and eviction waiting for him at home. He still had no job, no backup plan, and barely enough money to buy a sandwich.
A boarding agent approached him with a cautious expression.
“Mr. Carter?”
Alex stood. “Yes?”
“There’s someone asking for you near the information desk.”
His heart began to pound again. “Who?”
“I’m not sure. Airport security is with him.”
Alex’s first thought was panic. Had something gone wrong? Had someone blamed him for interfering? He grabbed his bag and followed her through the terminal.
Near the information desk stood a tall man in a dark coat, speaking quietly with two airport officers. He looked older than Alex by at least twenty years, with sharp eyes and the tense posture of someone used to giving orders. When he saw Alex, he stopped mid-sentence.
“Alex Carter?”
“Yes.”
The man walked toward him and extended a hand. “Daniel Reed.”
Alex shook it carefully. “How’s your sister?”
“Stable. Still unconscious, but stable.” Daniel’s voice tightened. “My niece keeps asking for you.”
Alex looked away, overwhelmed. “I only did what anyone should have done.”
Daniel’s face darkened slightly. “But almost no one did.”
Silence passed between them.
Then Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out a business card. Alex glanced down at it.
Daniel Reed
Chief Operations Officer
Marlowe Global
The letters seemed to shift in Alex’s vision.
Marlowe Global.
The company he had been flying to interview with.
Daniel noticed the change in his face. “You recognize the name.”
Alex almost laughed, but no sound came out. “I just missed a flight to interview there.”
Daniel stared at him.
For the first time, the controlled expression on his face cracked.
“You were the candidate from New Haven?”
Alex nodded slowly. “I was supposed to be there by four.”
Daniel looked toward the window, then back at Alex with something unreadable in his eyes.
“My God,” he whispered. “You gave up that interview for Lily?”
Alex did not know how to answer.
Daniel’s phone rang before either of them could speak again. He looked at the screen, answered, and listened. His face changed.
“What do you mean she asked for him?” he said.
Alex froze.
Daniel turned slightly away, but Alex heard every word.
“She woke up for thirty seconds,” Daniel said into the phone. “And the only name she said was Alex.”
May you like
Then Daniel looked back at him.
And Alex suddenly understood that the missed flight was only the beginning of something much larger.
