Chapter 48 - THE CHAMBER BELOW
The vibration continued for nearly ten seconds before fading into silence.
No alarms sounded.
No lights changed.
Yet everyone felt that something enormous beneath them had awakened.
Daniel unfolded Donovan's map again.
It no longer seemed complete.
Alex pointed toward the center.
"Wait."
A section that had appeared blank before now displayed faint lines.
Arthur leaned closer.
"The ink..."
"It wasn't visible."
Voss gave a quiet nod.
"Heat-sensitive."
Daniel looked at the joined pendants in Alex's hand.
"The metal generated enough warmth."
Slowly, hidden passages emerged across the map.
One newly revealed corridor extended beneath the courtyard itself.
At its end...
...a single circular chamber.
No room number.
No label.
Only one handwritten sentence from Donovan.
Do not open unless both are present.
Alex looked at Arthur.
"Both?"
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the photograph of Ethan and Noah.
Then back at the pendants.
"I spent years believing it meant both keys."
Voss quietly interrupted.
"It doesn't."
Arthur's eyes widened.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
Alex frowned.
"What does it mean?"
Voss looked directly at him.
"It means both children."
Silence filled the courtyard.
Daniel slowly lowered the map.
"You mean..."
"...Noah is alive."
Nobody denied it.
Before anyone could speak again, the stone beneath the oak tree split apart with a deafening crack.
The earth slowly separated into two massive halves, revealing a circular staircase descending into darkness.
Unlike every other level they had explored...
...warm air drifted upward.
Fresh air.
As though someone had been living below.
Then a single light appeared far beneath the staircase.
It moved.
Stopped.
And a man's voice echoed upward through the darkness.
"I've been waiting for you, Ethan."
Alex felt the blood drain from his face.
No one standing beside him had spoken.
