Chapter 11 - The Passenger Without a Name

The whistle grew louder.
A dim yellow light emerged from the far end of the tunnel.
An old railcar rolled slowly toward the station without anyone visible inside.
It stopped with a soft hiss.
The doors opened automatically.
Silence filled the cavern.
Rebecca whispered, "Is this some kind of trap?"
Arthur raised his flashlight.
The passenger compartment appeared empty.
Margaret stepped closer.
Every seat was covered in dust except one.
A leather briefcase rested neatly on the cushion.
Attached to its handle was a white envelope.
Margaret.
Only her name.
Nothing else.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a typed message.
If you have reached this station, then the first test is complete. Trust neither blood nor history until you have seen the complete archive. The truth about Eleanor was hidden because the truth about your husband was even more dangerous.
Margaret read the words twice.
"My husband?"
Daniel looked over her shoulder, visibly shaken.
"That's impossible."
Margaret opened the briefcase.
Instead of money or documents, it contained dozens of audio tapes, a projector reel, and a sealed metal cylinder engraved with the same lighthouse crest.
Arthur examined the cylinder without touching it.
"I've never seen one of these."
A sudden electronic tone echoed through the station.
One by one, powerful lights illuminated the enormous underground chamber.
Hidden security cameras slowly rotated toward them.
A calm female voice filled the station.
"Identity verification complete."
Margaret felt every hair on her arms stand up.
The voice continued.
May you like
"Welcome back, Custodian Family."
Then a wall at the far end of the station split open, revealing another chamber that had remained hidden for more than four decades.
