Chapter 34 - The Hidden Observer

The discovery transformed everything.
Daniel spread every photograph they had collected across a large stone table.
"If there's always a hidden observer..."
Rebecca immediately understood.
"...then we'll find the same person in other pictures."
For the next hour they examined every image with magnifying lenses found throughout the archive.
Birthday parties.
Foundation meetings.
Family picnics.
Harbor ceremonies.
At first they noticed nothing.
Then Margaret froze.
"There."
Far behind a school photograph stood the outline of the same figure.
Another picture revealed the observer reflected faintly in a shop window.
Another captured only the shadow.
Never close.
Always watching.
Helen gathered the photographs into chronological order.
"The observer aged."
Arthur looked surprised.
"So it wasn't different people."
"No."
"The same individual appears across more than fifty years."
Margaret counted carefully.
"The earliest photograph was taken before Daniel was born."
Rebecca found something even stranger.
In the most recent image—the one secretly taken of Margaret watering her roses—the observer no longer hid in the distance.
Instead, the figure stood openly across the street.
Looking directly into the camera.
As though aware the photograph itself would eventually be examined.
Daniel turned the picture over.
Nothing.
Then he held it beneath the desk lamp.
Invisible ink slowly appeared.
Only a short message.
Stop searching for Eleanor.
She's been searching for you.
Before anyone could discuss the meaning, every light inside the archive dimmed.
The mirrored ceiling from the evaluation chamber illuminated once again, projecting a live floor plan of Section Thirteen.
A single green dot moved steadily toward their location.

A calm computerized voice echoed through hidden speakers.
