Chapter 26 - The Recording That Changed Everything

The footprints ended inside a small projection theater.
Rows of empty seats faced a wide screen.
As soon as Margaret entered, the projector activated automatically.
Static flickered.
Then Eleanor appeared again.
This time there was no visible camera.
She seemed to be speaking directly to whoever would eventually watch.
"If you're seeing this recording, then you've already reached the Hall of Memories."
She smiled softly.
"That means you've ignored nearly every warning I left behind."
Arthur almost laughed.
"She always knew us too well."
Eleanor continued.
"I owe every one of you an apology."
Margaret leaned forward.
"For forty-three years I allowed my family to believe I abandoned them."
Her voice cracked slightly.
"I wanted nothing more than to come home."
Rebecca quietly wiped away tears.
"But there was one secret too dangerous to leave unguarded."
The screen changed.
Architectural drawings appeared.
Not of the lighthouse.
Not of Section Thirteen.
Something far larger.
An underground complex extending miles beneath the coastline.
Eleanor spoke again.
"Everything you've discovered so far..."
"...is only the outer archive."
Daniel looked at Arthur.
"You knew about this?"
Arthur slowly shook his head.
"No."
"The true archive," Eleanor continued, "contains every original record collected since the Foundation began."
The projector displayed one final blueprint.
A location marked simply:
Vault Zero.
Margaret whispered the name aloud.
Arthur's expression became grave.
"I've heard rumors."
"What kind of rumors?"
"That no Custodian was ever permitted inside."
The recording ended.
Instead of shutting off, the projector displayed a live security image.
Someone wearing a gray coat had just entered Vault Zero.
The figure turned slightly toward the camera.
Margaret recognized the face instantly.
It was Eleanor.
Alive.
May you like
Walking on her own.
