Chapter 28 - Beyond the Stone Door

The inscription lingered in silence.

ONLY THE FAMILY MAY DECIDE WHAT THE WORLD REMEMBERS.

Margaret rested her fingertips against the cold stone. Unlike every mechanism they had encountered before, there was no visible lock, no keyhole, and no electronic panel waiting to recognize their identities.

Rebecca studied the edges carefully.

"There has to be a hidden release."

Arthur slowly shook his head.

"No. This door wasn't designed to keep people out."

Daniel frowned.

"Then what is it designed to do?"

Arthur pointed toward twelve shallow circles carved into the stone floor.

"They're standing positions."

Everyone instinctively looked down.

Five circles had already begun glowing faintly beneath their feet.

Seven remained dark.

Helen walked toward one of the unlit circles but nothing happened.

Margaret remembered the rings recovered from the cedar chest.

She opened her bag and carefully placed the twelve Custodian rings onto the floor.

The moment the final ring touched the stone, every circle illuminated.

A deep vibration rolled beneath the chamber.

Ancient gears hidden inside the walls awakened after decades of silence.

The massive stone door separated slowly down the middle.

No dramatic treasure waited behind it.

Instead, an enormous circular hall stretched beyond the entrance.

Its ceiling disappeared into darkness.

Thousands of suspended glass cylinders floated in carefully arranged rows.

Inside each cylinder rested a sealed scroll.

Every family.

Every agreement.

Every promise.

Every betrayal.

Recorded by hand.

Margaret whispered, "This isn't a vault."

Arthur answered quietly.

"It's a memory of an entire generation."

Before they stepped farther, soft footsteps echoed behind them.

Not from the corridor ahead.

From the passage they had just left.

When they turned around, nobody was there.

Only the twelve rings had shifted.

One ring now rested several inches away from the others.

As though someone unseen had picked it up...

May you like

...and quietly placed it back down.
