Chapter 25 - The Hall of Memories

Hidden behind the Archivist's office was another corridor.

Unlike the industrial tunnels they had explored earlier, this hallway felt deeply personal.

Framed family photographs covered both walls.

Birthdays.

Graduations.

Wedding ceremonies.

Simple dinners around kitchen tables.

Margaret immediately recognized dozens of familiar faces.

There was Daniel blowing out candles at his eighth birthday.

Rebecca holding her newborn daughter.

Margaret herself tending roses in her backyard.

None of those photographs had ever belonged to the family.

Someone else had taken them.

Rebecca slowly touched one of the frames.

"This was taken through our living room window."

Arthur examined another.

"This one was taken from across the street."

Daniel looked furious.

"They documented our entire lives."

The hallway eventually opened into a vast gallery.

Instead of paintings, hundreds of illuminated glass cases filled the room.

Each case preserved ordinary objects.

A child's shoe.

A broken wristwatch.

A faded letter.

A wedding ring.

Every object carried a small brass plaque explaining whose life it had changed.

Margaret stopped before one particular display.

Inside rested the knitting needles she had believed lost thirty years earlier.

Below them read:

Used to create the blue blanket that successfully preserved Archive Key Two.

She felt tears forming.

"They knew everything."

Helen approached another display.

Inside lay Eleanor's passport.

Its final entry stamp was dated only four days ago.

Rebecca stared.

"She really has been alive all this time."

Daniel suddenly noticed fresh footprints crossing the polished floor.

Not old.

Not dusty.

Still damp.

They led toward another door at the far end of the gallery.

May you like

Someone had passed through less than an hour earlier.
